Onyx Storm: The Theories We Canā€™t Wait to See Confirmed

These are the main plot points we want to see confirmed in Onyx Storm. I will explain each one thoroughly, share my thoughts, and later, once Onyx Storm is published, Iā€™ll update this post with everything I discover in the book.

Be careful!! Spoiler heavy section!! !! Keep scrolling if you don’t want spoilers for Onyx Storm!!

A little recap: How Iron Flame ended

The third act in Iron Flame begins with the epic battle in Navarre.

Ā

Violet is able to momentarily activate the wards, but at the cost of her mother’s life.

Ā

When the battle is over, Violet goes to see Xaden, who, according to Tairn, is alive. Violet reaches Xaden, who is guarded by Sgaeyl in a protective way.

Ā

Xaden stands at the edge of the ravine, his back turned towards Violet. She tells him about the wards and her mother’s death.

Ā

However he is acting strangely; he doesn’t look into Violet eyes and seems to be emotionless

” Xaden drags his gaze and finally looks at Violet with a faint, almost indistinguishable red ring emanating from his gold-flecked irises”Ā

Ā

What happens to Xaden in Iron Flame

It seems Xaden has become a Venin. Venin are power-hungry beings that drain their power from the source.

They don’t get their magic from a gryphon or dragon like riders or fliers.

It is said that draining magic this way corrupts the soul. There is no cure (that is known) for this corruption, and as Jacks Barlowe says to Xaden in the last chapter:

” you can never give back what’s taken- you’ll only hunger for more “

There is a hierarchy for Venin, and it can be easily distinguished by their eye color.

We know that Xaden has now

a faint, almost indistinguishable red ring emanating from his gold-flecked irisesĀ

So he is an Initiate.( the lower rank) The red in their eyes depends on how much power they drain.

By reading the last chapter, we see that he is conscious but that he can now feel the power and the craving for it.

Fan theories about Xaden in Onyx Storm

Nolon was working on a serum that could be a temporary solution for the cravings, but at least in Iron Flame, there is no indication that one can return after turning into a Venin.

Ā

Rebecca Yarros has stated that Onyx Storm was her favorite book to write and hinted that itā€™s a somewhat sad book.

Ā

My thoughts? I donā€™t think weā€™ll see Xaden turn back into a human in Onyx Storm.

Ā

I believe heā€™ll be conflicted throughout the book and may even be tempted to go full dark mode. Iā€™m really hoping weā€™ll see his villain arc in this installment..

One of my weaknesses are main characters becoming villains (even if itā€™s just for a while, hehe) so I’m really hoping Rebecca fulfills my wishes haha.

Ā

Perhaps the cure will come in the fourth book?

What type of dragon is Andarna

In Iron Flame, Andarna goes through puberty, and her color changes.

Ā

Initially, everyone thinks she is a black dragon, but Violet keeps seeing hues of blue and green in her body. At first, she dismisses this, thinking that with her full growth, the color will turn black.

Ā

However, Andarna keeps telling Violet that she feels different from the rest of the dragons and that she doesn’t feel that she “belongs.”

Ā

In the end, we learn that Andarna is indeed a new breed, the seventh breed mentioned in the journals and the one needed to create new wards. ( they need 7 )

” I waited 650 years to hatch. Waited until your eighteenth summer, when I heard our elders talk of the weakling daughter of their general, the girl forecasted to become the head of the scribes, and I knew. You would have the mind of a scribe and the heart of a rider. You would be mine”Ā

Will Adarnaā€™s Breed Finally Be Revealed in Onyx Storm?

I suspect there will be clues scattered throughout Onyx Storm… perhaps leading up to a big revelation at the end of the book.

Ā

In some way, I believe Adarnaā€™s breed might be connected to Violetā€™s second signet. Considering Rebecca Yarros mentioned that there were hints about Violetā€™s second signet in Iron Flame, itā€™s possible that if these two elements are related, theyā€™ll be revealed together.

Violet Second Signet

Violet’s second signet hasn’t manifested yet, but the author has said that there are clues in Iron Flame that give away what her second power will be.

Ā

Some speculate she can communicate with dead people somehow (because of Violet seeing Liam during the interrogation with Varrish), but this is something we will definitely see in book 3 according to the author.

If you want to dig a little bit more into Violet’s second signet, the author has some clues for you:

“…but every single hint you would need to know what her second signet is is in ā€œIron Flame.ā€ Itā€™s manifested. Read it again and then call me” .

Violet Second Signet in Onix Storm: Fan Theories

These are some popular theories circulating around the web. In any case, Rebecca Yarros has stated that we will discover Violetā€™s second signet in Onyx Storm.

She can talk to the dead

This theory seems like the obvious choice, especially considering what happened with Liam when Violet was imprisoned. One might think this is the clear answer. The problem? Itā€™s too obvious..at least for me.

She is an Amplifier

This theory is fascinating.

It suggests that Violet can amplify other peopleā€™s signets, making them stronger.
For example, Miraā€™s shields, Dainā€™s memory-reading, and Xadenā€™s shadows could all be enhanced by Violetā€™s ability.
This theory resonates with me the most. It would be a unique and powerful gift that fits well into the story.

Violet can see people’s dreams

This theory comes from Xaden and Violetā€™s dreams about the Sage.

Some fans speculate that Violet wasnā€™t actually having nightmares about the general but was seeing Xadenā€™s dreams.

Ā

I think this could be partially true, but rather than being directly tied to Violetā€™s second signet, it might result from the bond between her and Xaden.

Who is the Sage?

The Sage is one of the central mysteries of Iron Flame and, in my opinion, one of the big revelations weā€™ll see in Onyx Storm.

Some fans believe the Sage is none other than Naolin, the former Tairn rider who saved Brennan.

And you know what? I think they might be right. Rebecca Yarros was very deliberate in never confirming that Naolin is actually dead.

“Naolin didn’t fail, but it cost him everything.”

This is a very popular theory and I think it could be on the right direction.

Excerpts from Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

Excerpt from Cosmopolitan:

“My heart stutters and my gaze rakes over Xaden’s tall, muscled frame, searching for any sign of injury.

Gold-flecked onyx eyes meet mine, and ny breath stabilizes only when I realize, he’s unharmed and there isn’t a single trace of red to be found anywhere near his irises.

He may technically be an initiate, but he’s nothing like the venin we just fought.

Gods, I love this man.

My thoughts:

Well, wellā€¦ this excerpt clearly seems to refer to the opening pages of Onyx Storm.

Violet is in complete DENIALā€”OMG!

Girl, heā€™s a Venin now. Unless you want things to end badly, donā€™t put too much trust in the fact that his irises arenā€™t completely red yet. Hehe.

Onyx Storm Excerpts from Rebecca's Instagram

Violet and Xaden trainning sesion?

Power rises, humming through me with insistent demand, and I lift my right hand, aiming my palm toward the sky of the open amphitheater.

Xaden vanishes from behind me a second before I release the strike.

“You’re astounding.” he says. “But you need to learn to find me”. Shadows rush against my skin, and less than a breath later, they’re gone, leaving me staring at Xaden’s retreating back as he climbs the stairs.” This demostration is over. I expect you all to come prepared next session,” he says over his shoulder.

“Why me?” I ask, more than aware of the other cadets staring as I find my balance. “Xaden!”

He doesn’t so much as pause his ascent. “Because you’re the only one capable of killing me.”

My thoughts:

This excerpt is giving me STRONG Vampire Academy vibes..specifically, the dynamic between Rose Hathaway and Dimitri Belikov.

Ā

For those who havenā€™t read it, Dimitri and Rose are the main male and female characters from the Vampire Academy series, and their relationship shares a lot of similarities with Xaden and Violetā€™s.

(WARNING: Vampire Academy spoilers ahead!)

Ā

Dimitri starts as Roseā€™s mentor but later becomes a Strigoi (which is very similar to a Venin in that they can only be created and they lust for blood, among other traits). Rose then goes after him to kill him.

Ā

The difference between Dimitri and Xaden, though, seems to be that Xaden appears to have more control over his new nature and is less afraid of itā€”at least from what we see in the excerpts. Violet, on the other hand, seems to be in complete denial or is putting way too much trust in his lack of red irises.

Violet overhears Xaden and Jack talking about her power

You can fight it all you want, but that power streaming through her veins?ā€ Jack taunts, his words growing clearer as I near the final few turns. ā€œThereā€™s a reason the higher-ups want her. A little brotherly advice? Fall in line and find someone else to fuck. That infamous control of yours so much as flickers in her directionā€”ā€

ā€œI would never,ā€ Xaden retorts, his voice lethally icy.

My heart rate doubles and I halt just before the last curve in the stairwell, keeping out of sight. Jackā€™s talking about me.

ā€œEven you donā€™t get a say in which parts of us are taken first, Riorson.ā€ Jack laughs. ā€œBut speaking from personal experience, control goes quickly. Just look at you, freshly fed from the source and already down here, desperate for a cure. You will slip, and afterwardā€¦ Well, letā€™s just say that silver hair that has you so besotted will be gray like the rest of her, and those weak-ass initiate rings in your eyes wonā€™t just last a few daysā€”theyā€™ll be permanent.ā€

Ā

For Onyx Storm, Iā€™ve noticed that Rebecca Yarros posted fewer quotes than she did for Iron Flame, but at least we got some excerpts! šŸ™‚

Ā

As with Iron Flame, Iā€™ll post the page number once Onyx Storm is released and check if my predictions about the context of the quotes and the authorā€™s intentions were right or wrong.

When the book comes out, Iā€™ll also add the full excerpt here to provide context for the quote and offer a bit of analysis on its meaning.

"Let Us be menaces"

This quote sounds like something Tairn (Violet’s dragon) could have said.

However, Iā€™ve found that promotional quotes without context can be quite misleadingā€¦

Another option is maybe Xaden going full villain mode??

I will not die today I will save him

This quote isĀ  quite self-explanatory..

I hope there is some way to go back to being human for him šŸ™

Chapter Twenty-seven

-Xaden-

Dain Aetos is dancing on my last fucking nerve. Between the petty comments heā€™s been making all afternoon and what Iā€™m sure he thinks are menacing glares, Iā€™m ready to lean over and introduce his face to the Montserrat briefing table.

But Violence wouldnā€™t like that, and as satisfying as it would be to hear his nose crunch against the polished wood, Iā€™m not about to do anything that could end this little training session early and jeopardize Imogenā€™s mission, should her squad realize she isnā€™t actually vomiting in the infirmary.

Not that the healer will remember her ever being there, thanks to Imogenā€™s handy little signet. If sheā€™s on schedule, sheā€™ll be on her way back from delivering the drop I brought with me. The thought makes me reinforce my shields just in case Dain acts on the threat in his eyes. Iā€™m not letting that fuckerā€™s hands anywhere near me.

ā€œSo all we do is wait for something to happen?ā€ Ridoc Gamlyn asksā€”by Dunne, did he just put his dirty-ass boots on the briefing table?

ā€œYes,ā€ the older Sorrengail sister answers from the head of the table to my left, then gestures with her right hand, knocking Gamlyn on his ass with lesser magic. ā€œAnd keep your feet off the table.ā€

The taller of the riders stationed here chuckles and updates the battle map behind Violetā€™s sister, but his face falls quickly, his eyes narrowing with suspicion when he catches me watching him. I scratch my neck at the top of my collar, right over my relic, and hold his gaze until he drops it.

Shit like that is why I keep my inconvenient feelings about Violet to my damned self, no matter how good she looks today or how delectable she smells sitting next to me, like some kind of citrus that makes me want to bury my face in the side of her neck and see just how pink I can get her cheeks to flush. No, if I did that, every rider in this room would look at her differently, and not in a good way. Leave it to me to fall for the one woman on the Continent I can never fucking have.

Still, Iā€™d put myself right between her and Liam, ignoring his knowing little smirk, when I took the chair closest to Violet. Thereā€™s nothing going on there, but he can back the fuck up when Iā€™m around.

ā€œConsider this your Battle Brief,ā€ Mira Sorrengail lectures as Gamlyn scurries back into his chair at the foot of the table. ā€œThis morning was about a quarter of the patrol weā€™d regularly fly, so normally weā€™d just be getting back about now and reporting our findings to the commander. But for the sake of killing time, since weā€™re in this room as the reaction flight for this afternoon, letā€™s pretend weā€™d come across a newly fortified enemy outpost crossing our borderā€ā€”she pivots to the map and marks a nearby location with a red flagā€”ā€œhere.ā€

Aetos is too busy glaring at me to look, so I settle back into my seat and do what I do bestā€”stare right back.

ā€œWeā€™re supposed to pretend it just popped up overnight?ā€ Thereā€™s a little snark in Emery Barnesā€™s tone, but I keep my attention on making Dain as uncomfortable as possible just for fun.

ā€œFor the sake of argument, third-year,ā€ Mira retorts.

Dainā€™s hands curl into fists on the tabletop, and a corner of my mouth rises. Heā€™s pathetically easy to rile.

ā€œI like this game,ā€ the shorter of the lieutenants stationed here comments from Miraā€™s side.

ā€œWhat would our objective be?ā€ Mira asks. ā€œAetos?ā€

Dain startles and jerks his focus to the map. I win. ā€œWhat type of fortifications are there? Are we talking a haphazard wooden structure? Or something more substantial?ā€

At least he asks good questions.

ā€œLike they had time to build a fortress overnight,ā€ Ridoc quips. ā€œIt has to be wooden, right?ā€

ā€œYou are all so fucking literal.ā€ Mira rubs at her forehead like weā€™re a headache she canā€™t kick. ā€œFine, letā€™s say they occupied a keep thatā€™s already established. Stone and all.ā€

Which means there would be civilians or possibly prisoners inside. Wide-scale dragon fire is out. Fine. Liam scouts out their defenses, then I drench the place in shadow for our assault. Half of us dismount while the other half take out the gryphons in the air, and I move in darkness below to free the prisoners while Emery directs controlled blasts of fire by air-wielding, using Quinn as a scout.

My mind runs through three other battle strategies, then stutters on a fourth as I glance in Violetā€™s direction and catch her lips pursing in concentration. Gods, that mouth. I dream about that mouth. Fantasize about that mouth. That kiss is burned into my memory like a relic, taunting me with what will never happen again, with what I never should have tasted in the first place.

Mira and Quinn start arguing about the scenarioā€™s parameters, and I force my attention back to the briefing.

ā€œHow many of you have been called out as third-years?ā€ Mira folds her arms.

Emery raises his hand and I lift a couple of fingers.

Violetā€™s eyebrows rise, but she stays quiet, just like she has been all afternoon. I crack open my shields just enough to sense that wispy silver bond thatā€™s been steadily growing between the two of usā€”the one she hasnā€™t noticed yet.

ā€œI told you, itā€™s been known to happen between the riders of bonded pairs,ā€ Sgaeyl reminds me, annoyance sharpening her tone.

ā€œAnd has Tairn told her?ā€ I ask, to which she doesnā€™t bother replying.

Dain turns a shade that reminds me of a tomato. ā€œThatā€™s not correct. Weā€™re never called into service until graduation.ā€

I bite back a laugh and offer him a sarcastic thumbs-up.

ā€œYeah, all right.ā€ Emery huffs a laugh. ā€œJust wait until next year. I canā€™t count how many times weā€™re the ones sitting in these very rooms in the midland forts because their riders have been called to the front for an emergency.ā€

Aetos pales.

If he knew half of whatā€™s actually happening beyond the borders, heā€™d probably pass out.

ā€œNow thatā€™s settledā€¦ā€ Mira sets a six-inch model of a stone keep in the center of the table. ā€œCatch,ā€ she warns before throwing each of us a wooden replica of a dragon.

ā€œYours are better,ā€ I whisper under my breath to Liam.

ā€œI know.ā€ He grins, running his thumb over the chunky wings of the figure.

ā€œPretend Messina and Exal donā€™t exist back there, and weā€™re the only squad available to take back that keep,ā€ Mira orders. ā€œThink of the power in this room. Think of what each individual rider brings to the table and how youā€™d use those powers in unison to conquer your objective.ā€

ā€œBut they donā€™t teach that to first-years,ā€ Liam says like he hasnā€™t been taught battle strategy since we were kids. Lewellen made sure of it once he took guardianship of us after the execution.

Miraā€™s gaze drops to the rebellion relic on Liamā€™s wrist, and I lift my chin. Theyā€™d better get used to us being in rooms like this, because weā€™re here to stay. At least until we get Aretiaā€™s forge up and running.

Violet clears her throat, and Miraā€™s gaze shifts to her little sister, her eyes flaring before focusing back on Liam.

My chest tightens annoyingly. Whatever look Violet shot her sister, it was obviously in our defense, and damn if that doesnā€™t hit me straight between the ribs.

ā€œThey might not teach you this battle strategy as first-years because youā€™re all busy trying to stay on your dragons. You had your first taste of strategy during the Squad Battle, and itā€™s almost May, which means final War Games should be beginning, right?ā€

ā€œTwo weeks,ā€ Dain informs her like he needs to remind everyone heā€™s still at the table.

ā€œGood timing, then. Not all of you will survive the games if youā€™re not prepared.ā€ Miraā€™s gaze lingers on Violet long enough to prick my temper. Of all the people in this room, Mira should know how capable Violet is. ā€œThis kind of thinking will give your squadā€”your entire wingā€”an advantage, since I guarantee your wingleader is already assessing every rider for their own abilities.ā€

I roll the dragon figurine over my knuckles and keep my mouth shut, since Iā€™m not supposed to be here.

ā€œSo letā€™s do this.ā€ Mira backs up, and I glance around the table, curiosity settling my attention on Aetos. ā€œWho is in command? And letā€™s pretend that I donā€™t have three years of seniority on even the highest-ranked of you.ā€

ā€œThen Iā€™m in command.ā€ Aetos sits up stiffly, like someoneā€™s called formation.

To my credit, I donā€™t laugh.

ā€œOur wingleader is here.ā€ Liam points in my direction. ā€œI would say that puts him in command.ā€

The wispy silver bond solidifies, an emotionā€”prideā€”dancing down the pathway even though Violet doesnā€™t move a muscle. Holy shit, we really are connected. This could beā€”

ā€œDangerous? Reckless? An unaffordable distraction?ā€ Sgaeyl snaps, and I swear I hear her teeth clash.

ā€œFun.ā€ Thereā€™s no denying the bond between us when itā€™s shining at me like a fucking mage light. ā€œWe can pretend Iā€™m not here, just for the sake of the exercise.ā€ I put my figurine on the table and settle in my chair, then wrap my arm around the back of Violetā€™s seat and enjoy the sight of Dain grinding his teeth. ā€œGive Aetos here the position we all know he craves.ā€

His jaw flexes, and I leave my arm planted like a battle marker. The command, he can have. Iā€™m mildly curious to see what he does with it. But thatā€™s the only position Iā€™m ceding to the spoiled whiner.

ā€œDonā€™t be a dick,ā€ Violet whispers.

ā€œYou havenā€™t even seen me start to be a dick.ā€ I send the words down the bond.

Her head whips toward mine, her lips parting as she openly gawks at me.

It worked. My heart stumbles, and I bite back a laugh. I was wrong. This isnā€™t just fun, itā€™s instantly vital to my existence. I turn toward her, letting a corner of my mouth rise, and look straight into those hypnotic hazel eyes. ā€œYouā€™re staring. Itā€™s going to get awkward in about thirty seconds if you donā€™t stop.ā€

ā€œHow?ā€ She spits out the whisper like an accusation.

ā€œThe same way you talk to Sgaeyl. Weā€™re all gloriously, annoyingly linked. This is just one of the perks. Though Iā€™m starting to wish Iā€™d tried it sooner. The look on your face is priceless.ā€ I wink and turn my attention back to the seething pot of jealousy boiling over across the table.

ā€œYouā€™re. The. Wingleader.ā€ Dain chokes out the words, and I canā€™t help but wonder if heā€™s submitting to my rank or accusing me of inappropriate behavior with a subordinate.

Not that I give a fuck either way. If it were safe for Violet, Iā€™d be ecstatically guilty of inappropriate behavior. Wickedly inappropriate. In my bed. In hers. On a table in the Archives. In the bathing chamber and every room with a door to lock so no one else can see whatā€™s mine. Iā€™d be so decadently inappropriate that her voice would turn hoarse from screaming my name every single day.

But though sheā€™d be the best thing that ever happened to me, Iā€™d be the worst thing that ever happened to her. The truth of it sinks like a stone in my stomach.

ā€œIā€™m not even supposed to be here.ā€ I shrug. ā€œBut if it makes you feel better, for the purpose of War Games, youā€™d be getting your orders from your section leader, Garrick Tavis, which heā€™d get from me. Youā€™ll be carrying out your maneuvers as a squad for the good of the wing. Just pretend Iā€™m another member of your squad and use me as you wish, Aetos.ā€ I withdraw my hold on Violetā€™s chair and cross my arms.

ā€œWhy are you even here?ā€ Dain whines. ā€œNo offense, sir, but we werenā€™t exactly expecting senior leadership on this trip.ā€

ā€œYes, why are you here?ā€ Sgaeyl doesnā€™t disguise the mockery in her tone.

ā€œYouā€™re more than aware that Sgaeyl and Tairn are mated.ā€ My voice stays respectively level. ā€œIt was your idea to bring the daggers.ā€ Iā€™m careful to only speak down Sgaeylā€™s bond.

ā€œIt seemed a prudent course of action, considering your insufferable intolerance to being separated from the generalā€™s daughter.ā€ She huffs.

ā€œThree days?ā€ Dain fires back, leaning in. ā€œYou couldnā€™t make it three days?ā€

ā€œInsufferable? Thatā€™s a bit far.ā€

ā€œWhereā€™s Violet now?ā€ she mocks. ā€œWhat is she doing? Is she thinking of me? Is she missing me? Is she getting closer to Aetos? Does she dream about that kiss? How many days until Violetā€™sā€”ā€

ā€œPoint fucking taken.ā€ Sheā€™s going to be unbearable on the flight home.

ā€œIt has nothing to do with him.ā€ Violet slams her dragon figurine on the table. ā€œThatā€™s up to Tairn and Sgaeyl.ā€

And there she goes again, defending me. Fuck, I love this woman.

ā€œYou never considered that it was you I couldnā€™t stay away from?ā€ I ask her. She jabs the point of her elbow into my biceps, and I fight the upward curve of my mouth. I love that she isnā€™t scared of me, that sheā€™ll call me out in a way no one else besides Sgaeyl does. Everything she doesā€”even blatantly elbowing me in front of her squadā€”turns me on. Iā€™m fucked on every level known to man when it comes to Violet Sorrengail. ā€œNow, now, youā€™ll give our little communication secret away if you canā€™t keep from being soā€¦violent.ā€

ā€œOf course you rush to defend him,ā€ Dain whines yet again. ā€œThough how you can forget that this guy wanted to kill you six months ago is beyond me.ā€

Heā€™s not lying, but that was when I hated the idea of her, before I knew herā€”loved her.

Violet stiffens. ā€œI cannot believe you went there.ā€

The hurt in her tone sets my teeth on edge. ā€œGood job remaining professional, Aetos.ā€ I scratch the relic on my neck to remind him exactly who the fuck I am. ā€œReally shows those leadership qualities to their best advantage.ā€

A rider stationed here whistles. ā€œDo you boys just want to whip it out and measure? It would be faster.ā€

Liam stifles whatā€™s obviously a laugh, and I shoot him a sideways look.

ā€œEnough!ā€ The table vibrates as Mira slams her hands onto the surface.

ā€œOh, come on, Sorrengail,ā€ the shorter rider on her left whines jokingly, and both Sorrengails glance his way.

ā€œI meanā€¦the older Sorrengail. This is the best entertainment weā€™ve had in ages.ā€

Violet shakes her head, clearly having had enough. ā€œMira has the ability to extend the shield if the wards are down, so the first thing I would do is send her to scout the area with Teine. We need to know if weā€™re dealing with infantry or gryphon riders.ā€

Excellent point. I hadnā€™t considered Mira in my own calculations.

ā€œGood.ā€ Mira sets her dragon close to the castle. ā€œNow letā€™s assume there are gryphons.ā€

ā€œSpeaking of gryphons,ā€ I say to Sgaeyl. ā€œAny news from Glane?ā€

ā€œStill out of range,ā€ she replies.

Sending Imogen an hour south, toward the Braevick border, was a calculated risk given that I hadnā€™t had much time to get a message to Syrena and her drift, but rendezvousing there was a far better choice than risking her being caught by Cygnis fliers. Cygnis fliers would take the daggers and then kill Imogen to make a point. Stubborn assholes.

ā€œYou want to do your job?ā€ Violetā€™s smile practically drips venomous sugar as she turns it on Dain. ā€œI mean, how you can forget youā€™re the squad leader is beyond me.ā€

Fucking love her.

His knuckles whiten around his figurine. ā€œQuinn, can you astral project from the back of your dragon?ā€

ā€œYes,ā€ she answers.

ā€œThen I would have you project into the fortress to check for signs of weakness,ā€ Dain says. ā€œAnd have you report back. Same with Liam. Weā€™d use your farsight to see if you can locate where the gryphon riders are and if there are any traps.ā€

ā€œGood. The weaknesses are the wooden gate,ā€ Mira adds as the two cadets move their figurines, ā€œand the Navarrian citizens they have captive in the dungeons.ā€

ā€œSo much for blasting the whole place,ā€ Ridoc mutters.

ā€œYouā€™re an air wielder, right?ā€ Dain asks Emery. ā€œSo you can shape your dragonā€™s flames, lead them through the occupied parts of the keep without killing civilians.ā€

ā€œYes,ā€ Emery answers with a nod. ā€œBut Iā€™d have to be in the keep.ā€

ā€œThen youā€™ll have to get into the keep.ā€ Miraā€™s shoulders rise and fall in a shrug.

Emeryā€™s eyes flare. ā€œYou want me to leave my dragon and go on foot?ā€

ā€œWhy do you think we get all that hand-to-hand training? Or are you going to leave all those innocent people to die?ā€ Mira flicks her wrist and Emeryā€™s dragon goes flying up into the air. Mira catches it, then sets it in the center of the model. ā€œThe real question is, how do we get you close enough without getting you killed? Since Iā€™m guessing the others will be busy fighting off the gryphons that launch once the fireworks start.ā€

ā€œWhatā€™s your signet, Aetos?ā€ Quinn asks.

ā€œAbove your pay grade,ā€ Dain answers.

Does he actually think that? Or is he so brainwashed by Daddy that he doesnā€™t see theyā€™re going to use him as a weapon against other riders?

He looks at every cadet except me, then sighs. ā€œAny ideas?ā€

Violet shakes her head, then says, ā€œSure.ā€ She snatches my dragon and pushes it at the keep, flaring her hand so the figurine levitates above the model. I shouldnā€™t be impressedā€”itā€™s just lesser magicā€”but damn sheā€™s sexy when she takes charge. ā€œYou stop ignoring that you have an incredibly powerful shadow wielder at your disposal and ask him to black out the area so no one sees you land.ā€

Spot-on.

ā€œSheā€™s not wrong.ā€ Mira bites the words out.

ā€œYou can do that?ā€ Aetos slowly looks in my direction.

ā€œAre you seriously asking?ā€ I reach for Sgaeylā€™s power, and it pours into my veins.

ā€œJust wasnā€™t sure you could cover an area thatā€”ā€

I lift my palms just enough to clear the table and summon the cooling darkness of the shadows. They stream out from under the table and blanket the room in less than a heartbeat, devouring all traces of light.

Panic skitters down the silver bond.

ā€œRelax. Itā€™s just me.ā€ I crook a finger, and a strand of shadow solidifies to skim along Violetā€™s cheek.

ā€œFuck me,ā€ a rider to the left says.

ā€œI can surround this entire outpost, but I think that might freak some people out.ā€ I close my hands, and the shadows jolt back to natural state, letting light pour in through the windows. Damn, that was fun. It was even worth the threat assessment Iā€™m getting from Mira. Violet tenses like she spotted it, too. ā€œI hope you didnā€™t get any ideas while we were in the dark there.ā€

She lifts her middle finger without even looking my way, and a laugh sneaks past my lips as Mira leads us through the rest of the exercise.

ā€œGood job,ā€ Mira finally says, checking the time. ā€œAetos, Riorson, and Sorrengail, I want to see you in the hallway. The rest of you are dismissed.ā€

This should be fun.

She leads the way, then shuts the door behind us once weā€™re in the staircase and throws a blue wave of energy over the doorway. Itā€™s an interesting use of power, when Iā€™m more than capable of constructing a colorless one for the sake of privacy.

ā€œSound shield.ā€ Dain smiles. ā€œNice.ā€

What a suck-up.

ā€œShut up.ā€ Mira pivots a few steps above me, one above Violet, and shoves a finger in Aetosā€™s face. ā€œI donā€™t know what bug has crawled up your ass, Dain Aetos, but have you forgotten that youā€™re a squad leader? That you have a very real chance of becoming a wingleader next year?ā€

Gods help every cadet if that happens.

Violet retreats a step in my direction, and my brow furrows. Sibling dynamics are something Iā€™ll never understand.

ā€œMiraā€”ā€ Aetos begins.

ā€œLieutenant Sorrengail,ā€ Mira interrupts. ā€œYouā€™re blowing it, Dain. I know how badly you want his job next year.ā€ She swings that finger toward me. ā€œDonā€™t forget that weā€™ve grown up about ten feet apart. And you are blowing it, because what? Youā€™re pissed that Violet bonded his dragonā€™s mate?ā€

Harsh, but I respect her candor.

ā€œHe is the worst possible thing for her!ā€ Dain raises his voice.

Huh. Guess we actually agree on something.

ā€œOh, Iā€™m not arguing that.ā€ Mira invades his space. ā€œBut thereā€™s nothing anyone can do about the choices of dragons. They donā€™t bother with the opinions of mere humans, do they? But whatever is going on between the two of youā€ā€”her finger flies between Violet and Aetosā€”ā€œis fucking up your squad. If I can see it after four days with you, then they sure as hell can tell. And if Iā€™d known that you were going to be such a hard-ass with zero flexibility for the things she canā€™t control, I never would have told her to find you after crossing the parapet. You two have been best friends since you were five years old. Figure your shit out.ā€ That last part is directed at them both.

Dain stiffens, then looks Violetā€™s way and nods, which she returns.

An irrational, ugly feeling sours my stomach. They have the kind of history that lingers, the kind that has me really contemplating the word ā€œjealousy.ā€

ā€œGlane approaches from the south,ā€ Sgaeyl tells me. ā€œThey were successful.ā€

ā€œThank you.ā€ Now to get Imogen to the infirmary, and no one will realize sheā€™d even been missing.

ā€œGood, now get back in there.ā€ Mira nods toward the door, and Dain departs, heading through the shield. ā€œAnd as for you.ā€ She descends two stairs and narrows her eyes on me. ā€œIs this what she can expect next year?ā€

ā€œAetos being an asshole?ā€ I keep my hands off my weapons. Killing Mira might appease the burning need for revenge Iā€™ve learned to live with, but itā€™s not worth upsetting Violet or dealing with the oldest Sorrengail sibling, either. ā€œProbably.ā€

Mira glares at me, and the resemblance to her mother is uncanny. ā€œMated dragons typically bond riders in the same year for a reason. You cannot expect your assigned wing or her instructors to let you both fly off every three days.ā€

ā€œWasnā€™t my choice.ā€ I shrug. Lying is easy, except when it comes to Violet. I havenā€™t quite figured that one out yet.

ā€œWhat are we supposed to do? Tell the giant, flame-throwing dragons how itā€™s going to be?ā€ Violet questions.

ā€œYes!ā€ Mira shouts, facing her sister. ā€œBecause you canā€™t live this way, Violet. Youā€™ll be the one who ends up missing the training you need, because heā€™s the more powerful of the two of you right now. But if you donā€™t get to focus on your training, then thatā€™s how it will always be. You wonā€™t ever become who Tairn can push you to be. Is that what youā€™re after, Riorson?ā€

My gut twists with anger, and power rushes through me. Fuck it, Violet would get over her sisterā€™s death eventually.

ā€œMira,ā€ Violet whispers and shakes her head. ā€œYouā€™re wrong about him.ā€

Only in some ways. The beating organ behind my ribs soothes the anger, and my power recedes.

ā€œListen to me.ā€ Mira grabs Violetā€™s shoulders. ā€œHe might wield shadows, Violet, but give him his way, and youā€™ll become one.ā€

And the power races back in, shadows pulsing at the edges of the stairwell. Iā€™m the one pushing Violet instead of babying her. If Aetos had his way, sheā€™d be smothered in cream robes.

ā€œThat wonā€™t happen,ā€ Violet vows.

ā€œIt will if he has anything to say about it.ā€ Mira pins a look on me that I donā€™t appreciate. ā€œKilling someone isnā€™t the only way to destroy them. Keeping you from reaching your potential seems like a great path to the retribution he swore against our mother. Think long and hard. How well do you even really know him?ā€

Violetā€™s swift intake of breath slices like a knife to my side.

ā€œThatā€™s what I thought.ā€ Miraā€™s expression softens, and I wait to see if sheā€™s going to take the Dain route. ā€œDo you even know why he hates our mother so much? Why the kids like him are put on the paraā€”ā€

Oh, fuck no, she isnā€™t ready to hear half of what their mother did to me.

ā€œIā€™m right here.ā€ I step up to Violetā€™s side. ā€œIn case you didnā€™t notice.ā€

ā€œYouā€™re kind of hard to miss,ā€ Mira counters.

ā€œYouā€™re not listening.ā€ I hold her accusing stare and lower my voice. ā€œI. Am. Here. Tairn didnā€™t drag her back to Basgiath. He didnā€™t break through her shields and pour his emotions into her. He didnā€™t demand she fly across the fucking kingdom. Your sister is still right here. Iā€™m the one who left my post, my position, and my executive officer in charge of my wing. Sheā€™s not missing out on shit.ā€ The truth of the words stings. I might be accomplishing a very risky run, but Sgaeyl is right. Weā€™re here because I couldnā€™t concentrate for shit knowing that Violet was this close to the border. I chose Violet over my wing.

ā€œAnd next year? When youā€™re a brand-new lieutenant? What shit is she going to miss out on then?ā€ Mira asks.

Yeah, fuck if I know. At this rate, theyā€™ll have to station me at Basgiath if I canā€™t get my shit under control and get overā€”

ā€œLove isnā€™t something you get over,ā€ Sgaeyl reminds me. ā€œWhy do you think I flew you all the way out here?ā€

ā€œTo mock me while cavorting with your mate.ā€

ā€œI didnā€™t say it wasnā€™t without its perks.ā€

ā€œWeā€™ll figure it out.ā€ Violet grabs Miraā€™s hand. ā€œMira, heā€™s taken every spare minute he has to train me on the mat for challenges or take me flying in hopes Iā€™ll finally figure out how to keep my damned seat without Tairn holding me in place. Heā€™sā€”ā€

Mira flinches. ā€œYou canā€™t keep your seat?ā€

Oh shit.

ā€œNo.ā€ Violetā€™s voice drops to a whisper.

ā€œHow the hell can you not?ā€ Miraā€™s jaw drops.

Fuck. What are the rules when it comes to interfering with sisters? Am I supposed to step in? Let Violet handle it? Lewellen let Liam and me beat the shit out of each other when we fought, but Iā€™m not sure thatā€™s the right approach here. Iā€™m also not about to infantilize Violet when her sister is doing a damned good job of it herself.

ā€œBecause Iā€™m not you!ā€ Violet shouts.

Mira jolts backward. ā€œBut youā€¦you look so much stronger now.ā€

ā€œMy joints and muscles are stronger because Imogen makes me lift these horrible weights, but that doesnā€™tā€¦fix me.ā€ Violetā€™s shoulders drop, and shadows pulse at the edges of the steps.

The color fades from Miraā€™s face. ā€œNo. I didnā€™t mean it like that, Vi. Youā€™re not anything that needs to be fixed. I just didnā€™t know you couldnā€™t hold your seat. Why didnā€™t you tell me?ā€

ā€œBecause thereā€™s nothing you can do about it.ā€ Violetā€™s smile is anything but happy. ā€œThereā€™s nothing anyone can do about the way Iā€™m made.ā€

The way sheā€™s made? Sheā€™s fucking perfect. Everything about her is what makes herā€¦Violet.

When the silence grows awkward, my power ebbs. ā€œSheā€™s getting better,ā€ I tell Mira, just to get her off Violetā€™s back. ā€œThe first few weeks wereā€¦disastrous.ā€

ā€œHey, he caught me before I hit the ground.ā€ Violet shoots me a not helpful look.

ā€œBarely,ā€ I admit, then rip my gaze from Violet to face down her sister. ā€œYou donā€™t have to trust meā€”ā€

ā€œGood, because I donā€™t,ā€ she says. ā€œAll of that power in the hands of someone with your history is bad enough, but to know your dragons are so tangled up that you canā€™t be more than three days from Violet is unacceptable in every possible way I can thinkā€”ā€ She freezes, her eyes going unfocused.

Unnatural quiet falls and unease ripples down my spine at the lack of the steady, quiet hum of background noise that always accompanies proximity to stored power. My stomach clenches. The wards are down.

Ā ā€œDrift incoming from the east!ā€ Sgaeyl snarls.

ā€œLet me guess. Theyā€™re not friendly?ā€ My gaze shoots to the top of the steps. I can have Violet on the ramparts in thirty seconds or less.

ā€œDefinitely not.ā€

ā€œFuck! The wards are down.ā€ Mira grabs Violet into a hug. ā€œYou have to go.ā€

ā€œWe can help!ā€ Violetā€™s voice pitches toward panic.

ā€œIs this us?ā€ Wards will only fall this quickly if the power supply is compromisedā€¦or stolen.

ā€œNo.ā€

Which means we have enemies within the keep already.

ā€œYou canā€™t.ā€ Miraā€™s voice cuts like steel. ā€œAnd if Tairn is using his power to keep you seated, then heā€™s diminished as well. You have to go. Get out of here. If you love me, Violet, youā€™ll go so I donā€™t have to worry about you, too.ā€

ā€œWestern rampart.ā€ Violet needs to be airborne now.

ā€œWhere do you think weā€™re already headed?ā€ Sgaeyl snaps. ā€œAnd youā€™d better be there with her.ā€

The squad races out of the briefing room and hurries down the steps as Mira releases Violet and pins me with a look thatā€™s equal parts order and desperation. ā€œGet her out of here.ā€

My head rears back. Did she just tell me to go with her? Fuck that.

ā€œLetā€™s go!ā€ Aetos yells. ā€œNow!ā€

ā€œEven if you donā€™t trust me, Iā€™m the best weapon you have,ā€ I remind Mira in a less-than-amiable tone.

ā€œIf what you say is true, then youā€™re the best weapon she has. The other half of the squad will be here in moments, and Teine thinks we have about twenty minutes until the gryphons arrive.ā€ Her expression shifts to a quick but blatant plea before turning to her sister. ā€œYou have to get to safety, Violet. I love you. Donā€™t die. Iā€™d hate to be an only child.ā€

ā€œI can get Violet out and track down whoever brought down the wardsā€”ā€

ā€œIf you stay, so will she,ā€ Sgaeyl growls. ā€œAnd need I remind you what happens to us all if sheā€™s killed while youā€™re off proving your acumen?ā€

Fuck. Every instinct but one demands I fight, but itā€™s that lone, sharply insistent slice of intuition screaming to keep Violet safe above all else that quickly conquers every other impulse. I breathe in sharply, then exhale pure frustration, mentally shifting to a new plan as I whip my arm around Violetā€™s waist and pull her against my side.

She flat-out fights me as Mira sprints up the stairs to the roof.

ā€œNo!ā€ Violet throws her body weight against my grip, but I hold fast. ā€œMira! What if you get hurt? Tairnā€™s speed could be the only thing that saves you. At least let us stay.ā€

Mira pivots at the doorway to face us. ā€œYou want me to trust you, Riorson? Get her the fuck out of here and find a way for her to keep her seat. We both know sheā€™s dead if she doesnā€™t.ā€

I nod, then shift my grip on Violetā€™s waist, locking my elbow around the delicate curve, and haul her ass down the stairs.

ā€œMira!ā€ Violet rakes her nails along my forearm. ā€œI love you!ā€ she screams over her shoulder.

Her cry rips into my very soul, but Iā€™m not risking her life, even for her sister. Shadows race ahead of us, pouring over the steps. If anyone is coming up this direction, Iā€™ll know before they so much as see us.

ā€œClose yet?ā€ I ask Sgaeyl as we turn the curve into the barrackā€™s hall.

ā€œNot quite. Glane has rerouted as well.ā€

Good. Gives us enough time for me to get my pack. If anyone finds the alloy-hilted dagger I keep stored there, Iā€™m fucked.

ā€œCan I trust you to get your own pack?ā€ I ask Violet, setting her on her feet. ā€œOr am I going to have to carry you out of here without whatever you brought?ā€

ā€œIā€™ll get it myself.ā€ She pushes at me, and I release my grip.

Two seconds later, she slams the door to the room she shares with Matthias in my face, and I head into mine just down the hall, finding Liam standing with his arms folded in the center of my room, his pack strapped to his back.

ā€œWas it us?ā€ he says. Itā€™s more accusation than question.

ā€œNo.ā€ I shove what few belongings I brought into my pack.

ā€œWas it us?ā€ He shouts this time, standing in my way when I turn for the door, like he could actually stop me from leaving if he wanted to.

ā€œNo,ā€ I repeat, looking him straight in the eye. ā€œI already asked Sgaeyl; we have no operations in the areaā€”ā€

ā€œExcept what Imogen pulled off today,ā€ he retorts, his hands clenching.

My jaw flexes. ā€œThis wasnā€™t us, Liam. You know Iā€™d never risk civilian casualties by taking down an entire outpost. Imogen carried two dozen daggers across the border, but even that amount of power wouldnā€™t be enough to affect an outage like this.ā€ I sheathe my swords in the scabbards sewn into my pack, then swing it onto my back.

Liamā€™s shoulders dip. ā€œThis isnā€™t on us.ā€

ā€œNo.ā€ I shake my head, then clasp his shoulder. ā€œGet to the roof. We need to mount.ā€

He nods. ā€œIā€™ll get Viā€”ā€

ā€œIā€™ve got her.ā€ I drop my hand and walk past him, swinging open the door to the hallway. ā€œSheā€™s not exactly in favor of leaving. Now, go.ā€

We split at the hallway, and Violet keeps me waiting less than a minute before barreling through her door carrying two packs and avoiding my gaze as she marches toward the door that leads to the courtyard.

I catch her elbow and spin her to face the correct direction. ā€œNope. Itā€™s too dangerous to leave the fortress walls. Weā€™re going up.ā€ I hook my arm around her waist before she can even think about fighting me, then carry her to the crowded stairwell before setting her down. ā€œClimb.ā€

ā€œThis is bullshit!ā€ Her cheeks flush as she narrows her eyes on me, members of her squad pushing past. ā€œTairn could help them!ā€

And she could die in the process. My resolve hardens to stone. ā€œYour sister is right. You have to make it out, so weā€™re leaving. Now fucking climb.ā€ Or so help me, Dunne, I will throw her over my damned shoulder right in front of everyone.

ā€œDain.ā€ Her gaze swings to the squad leader just ahead of us like heā€™s any fucking use right now.

He takes Matthiasā€™s pack from Violet. ā€œFor once, Riorson and I agree. Itā€™s not just you we have to get out, Violet. Think of every other first-year. Are you going to sentence an entire untrained squad to death?ā€ He starts climbing and, lucky for me, Violet follows. ā€œBecause Iā€™ll make it. Cianna, Emery, and Heaton will, too. And we all fucking know Riorson will. But what about Rhiannon? Ridoc? Sawyer? You want their deaths on your hands?ā€

Is it just me or is he already out of breath as we climb through the third floor and out onto the roof?

Emery mounts ahead of us on the annoyingly narrow rampart. The design is great for preventing fliers from doing the same, but itā€™s not doing us any favors at the moment.

ā€œRidoc and Quinn are already in the air,ā€ Liam announces, watching Emery launch on his brown clubtail.

I spot Deigh next to Cath, hovering with shallow beats of their wings.

ā€œYouā€™re next!ā€ I order Liam, and thankfully for our timeā€™s sake, Dain agrees, which means I donā€™t have to kill him.

Chunks of masonry tumble to the bailey below as Deigh lands, and Liam wastes no time, taking the rampart at a run just like weā€™d practiced hundreds of times in Lewellen.

ā€œYou next, Aetos.ā€ My gaze rakes the sky for any sign of Tairn.

ā€œComing behind you,ā€ the surly behemoth deigns to speak to me. ā€œSheā€™s not going to like the method.ā€

ā€œViā€”ā€ Aetos has the nerve to object.

ā€œThatā€™s an order.ā€ Just because I loathe the simpering daddyā€™s boy doesnā€™t mean I want to be responsible for the death of a younger cadet. Plus, I canā€™t afford Aetos Senior making my life hell. ā€œIā€™ve got her. Go.ā€

ā€œGo,ā€ Violet pleads.

Aetos turns my way and offers me his best impression of a threatening glare. ā€œIā€™m trusting you to get her out.ā€

I donā€™t have time for this bullshit. ā€œThereā€™s a lot of that going around today,ā€ I snap. ā€œNow get on your dragon so I can get her on hers.ā€

He heads down the rampart toward Cath, but heā€™s nowhere as fast as Liam.

ā€œWhat method isnā€™t she going to like?ā€ I ask Tairn, choosing the pathway that excludes Violet the same way he had.

ā€œIā€™m going to have toā€¦ā€ He pauses, and I note Violet scanning the sky above us. ā€œScoop her up. It wonā€™t be her most dignified moment.ā€

Oh, sheā€™s going to love that.

ā€œI canā€™t do this.ā€ Violet twists in my grip, turning those hazel eyes on me. ā€œThe others are gone. Call it the favor you owe me, I donā€™t care. We can stay. I canā€™t just leave her here. Itā€™s wrong, and itā€™s something sheā€™d never do to me. I have to stay for her. I just have to.ā€

Fuck. I get it. I really do. Liam and Bodhi are the closest things I have to siblings, and I wouldnā€™t leave with their lives on the line, either. But this isnā€™t Liam. Or Bodhi. Itā€™s her. And we arenā€™t at Basgiath. That approaching driftā€”and whoever is responsible for compromising the power supply for the wardsā€”will kill her if given the chance, and thatā€™s not something Iā€™ll ever let happen.

But damn, her courage has me tripping over my feelings for her.

ā€œApproaching,ā€ Sgaeyl informs me.

ā€œNot fast enough.ā€

Violet isnā€™t going to leave of her own accord; I can see it in her eyes, feel it in the tense lines of her back. I drop my shields and her emotions hurtle down the bond. Determination. Fearā€”

Sheā€™s going to bolt.

And thereā€™s only one way to stop her. I lift my hands from her waist to the velvet-soft skin of her cheeks, memorizing every color in her eyes as I cup the back of her neck, preparing to commit what sheā€™ll think is an unforgivable sin.

I kiss her. Itā€™s hard and raw, wild and desperate, and the way she opens for me, kissing me back with abandon, nearly takes me out at the knees. Gods, Iā€™ll never get enough of this woman. Her mind. Her tenacity. Her mouth.

I kiss her like this might be the last time sheā€™ll let me, like this is an alternate reality and thereā€™s a chance she could love me back.

I kiss her like sheā€™s mine.

Itā€™s a stolen momentā€”it can never be anything moreā€”but itā€™s ours.

Wingbeats approach and I ignore them, stroking my tongue against hers again and again, keeping my hands at the nape of her neck by sheer force of will, denying the urge to explore every curve, every hollow of her tight body. Iā€™ve never wanted anyone the way I want her, never craved a womanā€™s laugh as much as her touch, or needed her trust more than my next breath. Only Violet.

I tear my mouth away, the steady pulses of wings undeniable as Tairn and Sgaeyl approach. Wind gusts, catching the loosened strands of her hair as I lean my forehead against hers. ā€œLeave for me, Violet.ā€

She stiffens, accusation filling her eyes so quickly that I know sheā€™s figured out that I just used our attraction to distract her. ā€œI will hate you for this.ā€

Ouch.

ā€œYeah.ā€ I nod, accepting the consequences of my actions. ā€œI can live with that.ā€ I can live with anything as long as sheā€™s still breathing, so I drop my hands to her arms and force them out at her sides. ā€œArms up. Hold tight.ā€

ā€œFuck. You.ā€ She hisses out the words as a shadow falls over us, and I hit the floor, catching myself with my hands as a black claw fills the space I just occupied, hooking Violetā€™s arms and snatching her into the sky.

ā€œSheā€™ll never forgive me,ā€ I tell Sgaeyl as she lands on the narrow perch ahead of me. ā€œEspecially if something happens to her sister.ā€

She tilts her head, staring at me with typical impatience as I launch to my feet and sprint down the rampart toward her. Weā€™re airborne in seconds, her wings pummeling the air before I even reach the seat. ā€œIf she canā€™t forgive you for the least of your transgressions, then she doesnā€™t deserve you.ā€

ā€œI donā€™t think sheā€™ll see it that way.ā€ I get a good grip on her scales and settle in for the flight.

ā€œThen youā€™d better start praying to your gods that her sister survives.ā€

Some popular fan theories are:

  1. She can see dead people.
  2. Violet can enter another personā€™s dreams.
  3. She can amplify other riders’ powers.

Fans speculated that it could be a reference to Xaden or some new element that could be introduced in the book

Onyx Storm is the third book in the series. The second book is Iron Flame.

Final Thoughts: In-Depth Guide to Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

I have to confess something:

I didnā€™t really enjoy Fourth Wing

Ā

However, I decided to give Iron Flame (the second book in the series) a try because I knew by the end of Fourth Wing that the focus of the next books would be mostly outside of college and more centered on battles.

Ā

In Fourth Wing, I saw hints of Rebecca Yarros’ writing that I really enjoyed, especially the battle scenes.

She knows about strategy, how to set up stakes, and create tension.

Ā

Iron Flame didnā€™t disappoint. With fewer college scenes and more battles, the angst and tension between Violet and Xaden, along with that brutal plot twist at the end, I knew I was sold.

I expect Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros to be just as good as Iron Flame and can’t wait to read Xadenā€™s villain arc story.

Ā

Remember to mark your calendar with the release date of Onyx Storm, and donā€™t forget to preorder the special deluxe editions because they will sell out quickly!
