Alchemy of Secrets is the highly anticipated adult debut from Stephanie Garber, the author who quite literally took the Young Adult fantasy romance world by storm with her Once Upon a Broken Heart series.

She was already known in the community for her Caraval trilogy, but it was her spinoff series based around a very beloved Caraval character (Jacks of Hearts) that made her go viral. And from there… the chaos began.

Ā

Now, Stephanie Garber is back with her first adult novel, Alchemy of Secrets, a mix of dark academia, old Hollywood vibes, romance, and mystery.
Aaand of course, I couldn’t leave you guys without a complete guide to this gem, she’s one of my favourite authors (I even have a tattoo inspired by her previous series, haha).

Synopsis

It starts with a class in an old movie theater.

Folklore 517: Local Legends and Urban Myths, taught by a woman called the Professor. Most students believe the Professor’s stories are just fiction, but Holland St. James has always been convinced that magic is real. When she tracks down a local legend named the Watch Man, who can supposedly tell you when you’ll die, the world finally makes sense. Except that the Watch Man tells her she will die at midnight tomorrow unless she finds an ancient object called the Alchemical Heart.

With the clock ticking, Holland is pulled deeper into this magical world in the heart of Los Angeles―and into the path of a magnetic stranger. Everything about him feels like a bad idea, but he promises Holland that her sister sent him to protect her. As they chase clues and stories that take them closer to the Alchemical Heart, Holland realizes everyone in this intoxicating new world is lying to her, even this stranger. And if she can’t figure out whom to trust, not even the Alchemical Heart will save her.

Alchemy of Secrets Special Editions

Ok guys… brace yourselves, because this section is LONG.

Ā

There are at least eight special editions (and probably more!) when you count both the UK and US versions.
And to make things even more exciting, they’re completely different, and honestly worth collecting each one.
As with previous releases here on the blog, I’ve put together a detailed infographic with ALL the info about both the UK and US editions.

Ā

You can grab the infographic here and save it for later šŸ˜‰

Alchemy of Secrets US Special Editions

Standard editions are special this time as well!! The first batch of prints will come with black sprayed edges, a gold tint, and an exclusive cover design under the dust jacket.

So, if you don’t want to invest in a special edition (they’re usually more expensive), you can still get a beautiful, limited edition at the normal price, yay!

My favourite!! The Barnes & Noble Technicolor Exclusive Edition has lovely mint green sprayed edges, bonus content, and a special cover under the dust jacket.

The Alchemy of Secrets Special Target Editions comes in beautiful pink tones, an exclusive hidden cover and bonus material not seen in any other edition.

The Alchemy of Secrets Indigo Exclusive Edition comes with the same bonus material as the Barnes & Noble edition, has an exclusive alternate cover and foil design under the jacket.

Alchemy of Secrets Exclusive Bonus Material

Barnes & Noble and Indigo editions share the same bonus material.
The Noir edition from Target has exclusive bonus material not available in any other edition.

Alchemy of Secrets UK Special Editions

UK editions are… otherworldly.

Ā

If the US covers bring all the noir aesthetic and old Hollywood vibes, the UK editions follow the style of Stephanie Garber’s last series, Once Upon a Broken Heart.

The covers are whimsical, very dark academia, and they don’t exactly scream ā€œadult bookā€ the way the US ones do.

Ā

I love both, but the UK editions lean more into that fantasy romance vibe. I’ll be collecting both, of course, HAHA (I did the same for the OUABH series… sigh, my poor wallet haha).

As with the US editions, the standard editions of Alchemy of Secrets in the UK also have some unique features.
Just like A Curse for True Love, there are four different hidden foil designs printed underneath the dust jacket, and you’ll receive one at random (including the Alchemical Heart, of which there is only one in existence!!).

UK Hidden Covers

Uk alchemy of secrets hidden cover room 517

Uk alchemy of secrets hidden cover alchemical hearth
The Alchemical Hearth
Uk alchemy of secrets hidden cover the devil

These are the five lovely hidden covers you can randomly get when you purchase a copy of Alchemy of Secrets.

Ā

The hidden covers are the same for both standard and exclusive editions. Standard editions with hidden covers are LIMITED (I assume they’ll only last until the first print run is sold out… Stephanie only mentioned they are ā€œlimitedā€ but didn’t specify if that means just the first printing, as she did with A Curse for True Love, the last book in the Once Upon a Broken Heart series, which also came with hidden covers).

Ā

IMPORTANT: The gorgeous purple one is the Alchemical Heart. There is only ONE copy of Alchemy of Secrets with this hidden cover (one in the standard edition and one in the special edition). I’m dying to know who will be the lucky one who gets it!!

The only UK special edition with bonus content and a different cover. This edition comes in a beautiful mint sky blue shade with gorgeous sprayed edges to match.

The Alchemy of Secrets Goldsboro edition comes with exclusive sprayed edges in a dark blue tone, decorated with gold symbols.

My favourite, just after the Waterstones edition. Look at those lovely edges with little stars and that gradient blue!! This one is truly whimsical and special.

Well… I don’t quite like this one. That purple-pink tone just doesn’t match the overall look of the cover… but that’s only my opinion.

Infographic: Alchemy of Secrets UK Special Editions

Too much info to process!! Worry not, girl!! I made this infographic especially for you so you can decide which edition you want to buy šŸ™‚

(I actually made two—one for the US editions and one for the UK editions, and you can download both from the same link.)

What we know so far:

So, our (presumed) protagonist, Holland St. James, has always believed magic was real. She tracks down a local legend known as the Watch Man, who tells her she will die at midnight the next day if she doesn’t find an ancient object called the Alchemical Heart.

Ā

All of this unfolds during Halloween in Los Angeles, and after receiving this terrible news, she meets a magnetic stranger who was supposedly sent by her sister to protect her.
Digging into Steph’s Instagram, I found some tidbits about the story. She shared this in one of her posts:

It’s a story for anyone who’s ever looked for magic in our world, made questionable romantic choices, or spent Halloween trying not to die. It’s also a very ā€œmeā€ book, so if you’ve enjoyed any of my previous books, I think there’s a really good chance you’ll have fun with this one as well.

And from some of her other posts, we know for certain that the devil is involved in all of this… so maybe the devil is THE MAIN LOVE INTEREST??? OMG, PLEASE LET IT BE TRUE!! HAHAHA (ALL the Ninth House vibes and I’m here for it!!)

Ā

I’m guessing this magnetic stranger will be the first love interest—or maybe even the main one and potential endgame. Idk why, but I feel like there will be more than one love interest, and I’m dying to know if I’m right about this.

Ā

And as she said, if this is a very ā€œmeā€ book, then the description of the magnetic stranger matches her other iconic characters in Caraval and OUABH (Jacks and Legend).

Alchemy of Secrets Summary

Yes, I finished the book in record time, haha! So as promised… here’s the full summary (be aware is full of spoilers!!).

I’ve organised this summary just like the one for the This Woven Kingdom series , using subtitles so you can easily follow each part of the story. You can also skip straight to the ending using the mini table of contents below.

Ā

And don’t forget to check out the Ending Explained section once it’s up (coming soon!)Ā

I can’t wait for us to theorise together!

Holland, the girl who likes cocktails and urban myths

Holland grew up tagging along on her father’s treasure hunts. She learned to search for clues the way other children learned to play with blocks — or with each other.

She’s currently working on her thesis and has a fiery enthusiasm for everything occult, especially myths tied to Hollywood’s hidden legends.

Her parents were a famous director and an actress who met a tragic end. Holland and her sister, January, have kept that secret for fifteen years, ever since the murder and they no longer use their last names to avoid unwanted attention.

Ā

Back in uni, she took a class called *Folklore 517*, where each week the professor would discuss a different local legend or urban myth.

One night, whilst on a date with Jake (a lovely guy with definite Clair Kent vibes), she spots an alley with a strange sign and drags her poor date to follow her in.

Holland can’t believe her eyes. She’s standing before one of the myths her professor once mentioned: the Watchman. Legend says that if you ask the Watchman the time, he’ll tell you the exact moment you’ll die.

Ā

So, naturally, she asks.

Ā

And from that moment on, a chain of events begins that will change her life forever.

A Date that goes wrong and the Watchman urban myth

Holland receives a visit from a mysterious gentleman, Manuel Vargas, from the First Bank of Centennial City.

He tells her there’s a safety deposit box waiting for her at the bank, left behind by her late father.

She doesn’t think much of it and goes on with what’s been, up until now, a fairly ordinary life.

Then she gets a call from her date, Jake , the same Jake she thought had ghosted her after their night out. His voice is trembling as he says that *the Watchman called him* and told him he was going to die within hours. He begs her to come to his flat because he’s genuinely terrified.

Ā

When Holland arrives, the nightmare truly begins. Jake confesses that the Watchman told him the only way to extend his life was to *kill her*. And that’s not all: she discovers his name isn’t even Jake. He’d been hired to pose as her boyfriend and find out everything about Holland and her family. Moments later, she watches him die right before her eyes.

Ā

Then, the phone rings again.

Ā

It’s the Watchman.

Ā

And this time, he tells Holland *she’s next* . She’s going to die on Halloween night at exactly 11:59 p.m., *unless she finds the Alchemical Heart*.

The Stranger in the Black Suit

After discovering the exact time of her death, Holland bolts straight to her car, desperate to avoid any pesky questions from the police at the crime scene. She doesn’t have time to deal with them, that would only delay her from focusing on what truly matters now: *finding the object that could save her life*.

Ā

She tries to open her car, but it won’t start.

Ā

Suddenly, a man in a black suit appears from behind and tells her he’s there on behalf of her twin sister, January , that January sent him to protect her. Holland hesitates, but when she sees he has the same tattoo her sister has, and with the police sirens already closing in, he seems like her only viable option.

Ā

His name is Gabe. And according to him, her sister asked him to keep her safe.

Holland doesn’t fully trust this stranger, but she ends up confiding in him about the Alchemical Heart. To her surprise, Gabe already knows about it … and about the Watchman too. He tells her there’s a mysterious list of dates that supposedly predicts when and where the Alchemical Heart will appear… but warns that everyone who’s ever searched for that list has ended up dead.

Ā

Holland decides their next step is to visit The Professor: if anyone knows more about this artefact, it would be her.

When they arrive, the house is in shambles … vandalised, books scattered everywhere. Someone’s been searching for something.

Inside, they meet Adam Bishop, Holland’s current thesis supervisor. He claims that *he*, not Gabe, was sent by January to protect her, and insists Gabe is lying.

Holland doesn’t know who to believe. Both men swear they’re acting on January’s orders, but clearly one of them isn’t telling the truth.

Ā

Before she can decide, Gabe tells her that Adam is dangerous and urges her to run. Moments later, he pulls out a gun… and shoots him.

The Escape, the Devil, and the Sidecar Drink

After the fight at the professor’s house, Holland realises Gabe’s been injured too. They can’t risk going to a hospital — too many questions, too much attention — so she decides to take him back to her place. Besides, she remembers the professor had mailed her something before her death, and she’s certain it’s important.

Ā

Holland knows she needs the professor’s journal if she’s going to find more clues about the Alchemical Heart.

It’s becoming painfully clear now: every one of the professor’s so-called ā€œurban mythsā€ is real. And if she doesn’t find the artefact soon, she’s going to die tomorrow.

Ā

One myth in particular stands out: *the Devil*.

Ā

According to legend, the Devil can be summoned by buying him a Sidecar cocktail. But beware: he always demands something impossible in return for his favours.

When they reach Holland’s home, her hunch proves right … the professor’s journal is waiting for her, and inside are more clues about where to find the Alchemical Heart.

She heads into January’s old room, grabs a backpack and a change of clothes, and tells Gabe she has an appointment the next day at the First Centennial Bank, the same place where her father left that mysterious box for her.

Ā

But Gabe’s reaction is immediate and intense. He insists they *can’t* go there. He explains that after the Alchemical Heart was first discovered, the magical world fractured into three factions: those who wanted to destroy the artefact, those who wanted to use it, and those who wanted to keep it hidden and untouched , the last group being the *Centennial Bank*.

Ā

And to achieve that, Gabe warns, they wouldn’t hesitate to hurt people… or wipe their memories clean using magic.

The First Centennial Bank and a Betrayal

Gabe and Holland decide to head to the Centennial Bank. Gabe warns her that it’s far more dangerous than it seems and insists he’ll wait outside whilst she retrieves the box her father left behind.

ā€œWhy would I be nervous?ā€ Holland said. ā€œI’m just going into an evil bank to retrieve an object that may or may not be there, and I’m just now realizing that I don’t even know what it looks like.ā€

Inside the bank, Holland is shocked to discover that the manager is none other than The Professor. But that’s not the strangest part. The professor now reveals she has a magical ability: *she can read minds.*

She warns Holland that Gabe is not who he claims to be. According to her, he’s after the Alchemical Heart for himself and he even killed his wife.

Ā

Holland is torn. She doesn’t know who to trust anymore.

Ā

Still, she decides to open her father’s box. Inside, she finds the missing screenplay for the final film of his unfinished trilogy, the one left incomplete after his death. As she reads through it, she realises it’s not just a script… it’s a clue. Her father left her a hidden message within its pages.

Panicking, she hurries outside, trying to avoid Gabe, but she runs into Eileen, her university friend. Eileen says she works at the bank and offers to help Holland escape.

Ā

Among her sister January’s belongings, Holland finds a strange key. After a moment, it clicks: the key belongs to *The Regal Hotel*, a legendary magical place where time flows differently. One hour inside equals one minute in the real world.

It’s the perfect hiding spot. The one place where Holland might finally have enough time to figure out what’s really going on , and who she can trust.

The Regal Hotel and Adam

Eileen drops Holland off at the doors of The Regal Hotel, and she heads to the check-in counter.

Things quickly go south , the concierge insists the key she’s carrying is stolen and refuses to let her stay. But just when it looks like she’s about to be thrown out, the most unexpected person steps in to save her.

Adam Bishop.

He stops the staff from escorting her out and simply says:

You’re my guest, which means if you want to stay in this hotel, you need to stay with me for the next twenty-four hours

With no other choice, Holland agrees to stay with him.

Adam explains that he works for the bank , that after being shot by Gabe, they brought him here to heal. Holland, still wary, tells him everything she’s been searching for. Adam insists once again that her sister January sent him to help her.

Together, they decide their next move will be to find the Watchman the very name hidden as a clue in her father’s missing screenplay.

Ā

When they finally meet him, the Watchman reveals the truth about her father: he was born into a long line of magic-wielders, a family that had guarded powerful artefacts for generations. The Watchman knew Holland would come that day because her father possessed a rare gift; the ability to glimpse fragments of the future.

ā€œAfter saying the Alchemical Heart was too powerful for any man to possess, your father asked me to hold on to the envelope I just gave you, until a day came when one of his daughters paid me a visit.ā€

The Two Devils

Adam and Holland leave the Watchman’s house, but Holland still doesn’t trust him. Quietly, she hides the envelope she received from the Watchman before Adam can see it.

Adam notices, of course. And in a rare moment of honesty, he decides to confess something in hopes of earning her trust.

Ā

He tells her he used to be the Devil.

Ā

Adam explains that he has a brother, Mason — the *other* Devil — who’s now imprisoned inside the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Years ago, Adam stripped Mason of his powers to stop him from hurting people. It was an act of mercy, he says, though Holland can’t quite decide if it sounds noble or terrifying.

Ā

As their uneasy partnership continues, Holland starts noticing other strange things about him … like the fact that he doesn’t age. She begins to suspect that Adam Bishop comes from an ancient magical bloodline, one blessed (or cursed) with multiple abilities.

Ā

And then she discovers the most frightening one of all: Adam has the power to erase a person’s memories with just a single touch.

One Last Time Before Midnight

After following clue after clue left behind by her father, Holland finally deciphers the last one it leads straight to their final destination: the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

When she arrives, the hotel is alive with a Halloween party in full swing. Among the crowd, she spots familiar faces, her professor, her friends… and Gabe, who’s still searching for her, desperate to get his hands on the Alchemical Heart. Or at least, that’s what he *claims* his intentions are.

Ā

Inside the hotel, Holland encounters Mason , and what she discovers shatters everything.

Mason is a ghost. And Adam… isn’t the hero he pretended to be.

Ā

Mason reveals the horrifying truth: Holland has been trapped in an endless loop. Every time she searches for the Alchemical Heart, she fails , Adam kills her and everything resets.

Then at exactly a quarter after midnight, time turns back to Halloween Eve, and we do this dance all over again.

Mason tells her he remembers it all because, as a ghost, he’s no longer bound by time.

Holland finds a necklace in her backpack and Adam immediately believes it’s the Alchemical Heart. He kisses her tenderly… then stabs her with a poisoned blade.

Ā

As she lies dying, Holland remembers the professor’s journal still tucked away in her bag. On instinct, she clutches it and her hunch proves right.

The journal transforms into the Alchemical Heart itself. The artefact can take any form… even that of a human being.

Ā

With her final breath, Holland begs the Heart to heal her and to grant Mason’s wish. The artefact obeys. Mason is freed, restored to life once more and Adam takes Mason’s place, now a ghost who is not able to leave the Hollywood Roosevelt again.

The End of the Loop

Holland manages to heal herself using the power of the Alchemical Heart. The artefact, now taking the form of Manuel Vargas — the same man who first appeared at her door at the beginning of the story — tells her she can use its magic for her own benefit if she wishes.

But Holland hesitates. She only asks for one thing.

Each human is made with a unique, inactive ability. I can activate this power. But you can’t choose what it is. And you won’t know what it is until after it’s been activated.ā€

After that, she makes her final choice , to send the Alchemical Heart into the future, hoping that whoever finds it next will be kind, and will use its magic only once… and never again.

Even after everything, Holland is left with more questions than answers.

Ā

Was Gabriel truly the villain? What part did her sister January really play in all of this?

Ā

Sometime later, she runs into Mason Bishop on the beach. He thanks her for bringing him back to life then disappears, leaving behind only a matte black business card edged in gold.

Alchemy of Secrets Spice Level

Alchemy of Secrets Spice Level: Extra Mild

Again, looking for clues on Stephanie Garber’s Instagram, she stated:

I know some of my younger readers have reached out with questions regarding content and if it’s appropriate for younger audiences. This is an excellent question! Although this book is adult, I really tried to write a book that all my current readers would enjoy and feel comfortable reading.

And OwlCrate has given the book 1 star on their Spice Scale (extra mild).

So, I think Alchemy of Secrets will not have a huge amount of spice (if any), but maybe some closed-door scenes like in The Cruel Prince. However, since this is Stephanie Garber, we’re talking about, she is SO GOOD at creating tension that you honestly forget about the spice.

Ā

So, for my beloved readers who can’t live without a little bit of spice, I strongly recommend making an exception with this one and giving it a try.

Ā

Some of them don’t make ANY sense haha, but they’re useful to try and guess the overall vibe of the book.

Ā

After the book is released, I plan to add a little comment about each quote to give some context (it will be spoilery… but I’ve done that before on this blog for other big releases, and it’s always fun matching the quotes with the actual context, yay!).

I don’t know who he is, but he smells like trouble and ENDGAME.

UPDATE AFTER READING THE BOOK:

Oh well. I thought this guy was going to be endgame… but after finishing the book, I seriously doubt Gabe is the one for Holland. He still seems to be mourning his late wife — and he betrayed her. We’ll have to wait for book two to truly see what his real motivations are.

Nice is such a disappointing word.

Alchemy of Secrets Best Quotes

What a rollercoaster… this book has that classic Garber-style writing: lush, whimsical, and full of quotes you’ll want to tattoo on your soul.Ā
Rereading them now, I noticed an even deeper meaning behind some of the things the characters said (you know those lines that hit different once you know the truth?).

I handpicked a few quotes that I’m sure will become fan favourites , and others that are seriously revealingĀ
Of course, it goes without saying… this section is a spoiler bomb. Read at your own risk!!

Hollywood was not built on dreams, it was built on favors from the devil, and the devil does not handle it well when those favors aren’t paid back.ā€

One of the promo quotes.

I honestly thought the devil was going to be a major player in the story, but… meh. It fell a bit flat for me. Basically, I didn’t love that ā€œthe devilā€ turned out to be just two humans — I was expecting an actual magical creature who’d fall in love with Holland and make her life a living nightmare… maybe even try to kill her. (Well… we did get that kind of character, though. Can you guess who I’m talking about? )

ā€œTrust me, Bright Eyes,ā€ he said, and he sounded like Adam, too. ā€œI’m not going to let anyone hold on to you but me.ā€

He’s ENDGAME. I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise, hahaha. He is Jacks from Once Upon a Broken Heart, period.

ā€œI don’t know why you’re arguing.ā€ He took another step until she was once again too close to him and his bare chest. ā€œWe both know I’m sleeping in whatever bed you’re sleeping in.ā€

Our poor Gabe… well, at least he tried, but Adam was always two steps ahead of him.

Holland had a fleeting thought that it would be nice if certain relationships came with care instructions like clothing labels: For emergency use only. Avoid close contact. Do not put in bed together.

There was something about Adam Bishop, some unnameable quality that made Holland feel as if either he was going to be her unlikely drunken savior or he was going to be the end of her.

ā€œWhat are you doing?ā€ Holland asked. ā€œWe need to find the Alchemical Heart.ā€ ā€œAll you need is me,ā€ Adam said. Then his lips were on hers.
