Introduction
Now that ‘Divine Rivals’ has been nominated by Barnes and Noble for ‘Best Book of the Year,’ it’s a great time to dive into the highly anticipated sequel, Ruthless Vows.
I read Divine Rivals back in July, and it instantly became one of my favourite reads of 2023. The setting, the character-driven plot, and the romance between the characters were simply exquisite.
I couldn’t believe that the sequel and final book would be released in the same year! After one of the biggest cliffhangers I’ve ever read in my life, I truly appreciated the author moving the release date closer.
Let’s dive into all the information we have for Ruthless Vows so far because there’s a lot!

Ruthless Vows Spoilers
Excerpt from Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross
Cosmopolitan published an exclusive excerpt of ‘Ruthless Vows’ on their website, which can be found here:
Excerpt of Ruthless Vows summary
Iris is back in Oath after the events in Avalon Bluff.
People in Cambria are tired of the constant war, and the animosity shows in the city. Paintings with phrases against the gods can be found all around the city, and Iris is worried that this can escalate further.
She continues to work at the Inkridden Tribune, and in the excerpt, she finds herself shivering at the thought that someone is following her (maybe Roman?).
Iris arrives at her workplace, where we meet Thea Attwood (Attie), her colleague, and another war correspondent who was with Iris in Divine Rivals.
Attie is worried about her friend and asks about Roman’s whereabouts. There is an intense search for Roman Kitt, and we learn that Iris has sent countless telegrams since she had returned to Oath to see if someone has found him.
The excerpt also explains what Iris thinks happened with her magic typewriter. We learn that the ‘Third Aluette’ is still in Marisl’s B&B, back in Avalon Bluff, or at least that’s what Iris thinks.
The excerpt ends with Iris receiving a letter, but we don’t know who the sender is.
My thoughts on the Ruthless Vows excerpt
To understand the excerpt, we first need to analyze the blurb for Ruthless Vows.
In the blurb, we learn that Roman has lost his memories and that he is receiving letters from a mysterious pen pal.
By reading the synopsis, we discover that this pen pal is, indeed, Iris, and that Roman will have to choose between staying with the god who saved his life or returning to his wife.
In the excerpt, Iris receives a letter, but there is no indication that she has begun writing letters with her Alluette to Roman. So, this happens before that.
The mysterious person who is following Iris could be Roman, but if he has lost his memories, it doesn’t make sense that he is following her. So maybe it’s Forest or another character to be introduced later.
In conclusion, from the excerpt, we learn that:
- Roman is still missing.
- People are upset by the war.
- The Third Aluette is missing.
- Iris receives a letter that could potentially be from Roman
Ruthless Vows Quotes
āShe had the strange feeling that while everything around her had changed and evolved like the seasons, she had not. She was the same as she had been centuries ago, drawn from very old wind and cold constellations.ā

Ruthless Vows Theories
Here are some Ruthless Vows theories I’ve seen on the internet that really make sense and could bring some insight into what can be except from the last book in The Letter of Enchatment series
Iris and Roman are Enva and Dacre reincarnated
Well, I can totally see where this is coming from, and it’s a really interesting theory.
I thought this for some time as well, but lately, I discarded this theory.
The epilogue in Divine Rivals is a clear sign that Dacre, as an entity, exists in Cambria because it’s written from his POV.
Unless he is an unreliable narrator and we are being tricked into thinking that he is indeed Roman, Dacre and Roman are two separate people.
The explanation for Enva is a little bit more complicated because Enva hasn’t appeared yet… so she could potentially be Iris.
I think they both represent Dacre and Enva’s love. Their story is similar, but I don’t think they are the gods themselves.
Marisol is Enva
This is another popular theory that has been around social media.Ā
Have faith..This house will not fall. Not while I’m within it.”
Well well…this is indeed suspicious …
This quote is from page 318, when bombs are falling, and everyone is scared that the B and B will be a target. Marisol says this :
“Another bomb exploded. But it was as Marisol swore: the B and B shuddered, but didn’t crumble.”Ā
So, what’s Marisol’s role in all of this if she is really Enva? Is she here to protect Iris? Is she connected to the war correspondents?
Perhaps Enva can take on the form of different individuals and isn’t a corporeal being like Dacre.
I hope all these theories are answered in ‘Ruthless Vows,’ and I can’t wait to find out if they’re true!
