Do I need to read Caraval before the Once Upon a Broken Heart series?
The Once Upon a Broken Heart series is kind of a spin-off from The Caraval Series. I can tell you from my own experience that you donāt need to read the Caraval series before reading the Once Upon a Broken Heart series.
Ā
That being said, I effectively read Caraval AFTER The Ballad of Never After ( the second book in the series ) and it hasĀ important info you donāt want to miss if you are going to read A Curse for True Love.
Ā
It is important to remember that Jacks indeed appears in the Caraval series and is a very important antagonist. You can see him in Book 2 (Legendary) and Book 3.
Ā
I strongly recommend reading The Caraval series before reading A Curse for True Love.
Like I said before, you can read Once Upon a Broken Heart and The Ballad of Never After without having read Caraval, but for A Curse for True Love I thing it would be wise to follow this order:Ā
Ā
Reading Order for A Curse For True Love
- Once Upon a Broken Heart
- The Ballad of Never After
- Caraval Series
- A Curse for True Love
In case you want to skip Caraval, here is some important info to better understand what will happen in A Curse For True Love
Evangeline turned into stone at Luc’s and Marisol wedding happens at the same timethan Finale ( whren the Fates have already been released from the Cards ) And it is even mentioned in Finale that “a girl has turned into stoneĀ
- Fates cannot feel love. If they fall in love, they become mortal
- In Legendary Jacks makes his first appearance. It is explicitly stated that Jacks’true love is Tella. He gets obsessed with her through Books 2 and 3 but losses the love battle to Legend ( Jacks didn’t want to love Tella. he was obssesed. Dante gives up inmortality for TellaĀ
A Curse for True Love Review ( no spoilers)
And the fairy tale is over. š
Ā
It was a long and magical ride, and it was worth the wait.
Ā
A Curse For True Love is everything you can expect for an ending of a magical trilogy like this one.
The book begins right after the events of The Ballad of Never After.
Ā
Evangeline has lost all her memories regarding Jacks and the Magnificent North, and she is found by Apollo, who takes her into his care.
Ā
Jacks is being accused of Evangeline’s memory loss and is hunted throughout the entire Kingdom by the ruthless Apollo, who wants him dead.
Ā
With her memories lost, Evangeline tries to accustom herself to her new life as a princess.
Ā
However, something in her head tells her that she has forgotten something of vital importance, but she cannot remember what it is
Ā
A Curse for True Love is told from the perspective of our three protagonists: Apollo, Evangeline, and Jacks.
Ā
This is a dream come true for a reader, and Jacks’ POVs are spectacular. It’s so rewarding to be in his mind and see what he thinks about Evangeline, what he feels, and his real intentions.
Ā
This adds lots of layers to the story and gives meaning to some breadcrumbs left in the other two books.
Ā
The story never feels dull, with short chapters and lots of things happening. It feels like a rollercoaster, and there were times when I didn’t want to continue reading, afraid of what will happen to my beloved characters.
Ā
I had the same feeling with the last book of the Caraval series, ‘Finale,’ which was packed with lots of plot twists and angst. So, we can say it’s Stephanie’s signature to give us this kind of plot development in the last books.
Ā
What I love about Stephanie Garber is that she infuses her stories with magic and tales, but she doesn’t forget that villains (and heroes) in fairy tales are not always nice, good characters.
Ā
Her characters have a good dose of evilness in their hearts. While reading ‘A Curse for True Love,’ I couldn’t help but think that some passages could perfectly belong to the ‘Red Wedding’ scene in ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series – Game of Thrones- (book 3, ‘A Storm of Swords’).
Ā
A Curse For True Love is the perfect trilogy for readers who love fantasy romances with fairy tale elements, wicked characters, magic, and curses.
It goes right into my top 3 reads of 2023.
A Curse For True Love Jacks' POV
A Curse For True Love is told from the perspective of the 3 main characters. Evangeline, Jacks and Apollo.
But the most interesting by far were Jacks’ chapters.
We finally are able to delve into his mind, see what he thinks…what his feelings for Evangeline are..I LOVED his POV and I would re-read them again and again.

A Curse for True Love Spice Rating and spicy chapters
A Curse for True Love has ZERO spice.
There are kisses and some light touching but that’s as far as it goes.Ā
Despite this, there is a lot of tension and angst in this love triangle.
The only spicy scene that involves some touching happens in this chapter:
Chapter 29, page 207
Evangeline and Jacks are in an Inn where there is only ONE BED. Jacks undresses Evangeline leaving her with only her chemise. He touches her breasts.

A Curse for True Love Ending Explained
Be careful!! Spoiler heavy section!! !! Keep scrolling if you don’t want spoilers for A Curse for True Love!!
Jacks only wants to protect Evangeline, and because of his curse, he thinks the only way to protect her is by staying away from her.
Ā
But all along A Curse for True Love, he finds it impossible to stay away from her, so he decides to take drastic measures.
Ā
People have two hearts: the one that beats and keeps you alive, and the other one, capable of breaking ( feeling love).
Ā
Jacks decides to burn this second heart (the one that loved Evangeline) in the Phoenix Tree, so he could be free of his feelings for her, and Evangeline would be safe.
Ā
The phoenix tree is the one that is mentioned when Evangeline first came to the Magnificent North, where Apollo posed for a portrait.
Ā
This old and ancient tree has leaves the color of gold, but if a person plucked one before the leaves changed, then the entire tree would go up in flames.
Ā
The only way to burn a heart for good is with the flames of a phoenix tree, so Jacks goes there to put an end to his misery (and Evangeline’s).
Ā
Once there, he finds Evangeline already by the tree.
Ā
Evangeline, since the second book, believes that there is a way to break Jacks’ curse, and that is through love.
But in A Curse for True Love, she thinks that it is her love that will break the curse but also Jacks’ feelings for her.
“Maybe it wasn’t her love alone that would save him. Maybe it had to be his love, too.”
When Jacks arrives at the phoenix tree, they exchange some words, and Evangeline discovers that she had died once, and that Jacks was terrified of the thought of seeing her die again.
Ā
Evangeline doesn’t want Jacks to surrender to their love, and she kisses him.
“You’re my love. You are mine. And you’re not going to be the end of me, Jacks.”
Of course, Evangeline was right, and she doesn’t die after kissing Jacks, breaking the curse once and for all.
What happens to Apollo
After breaking the curse, Apollo kidnaps Evangeline and takes her to the Tree of Souls. This tree has the power to grant immortality but at the cost of killing what you love most.
Ā
Apollo knows now that Evangeline has chosen Jacks again. He is jealous and angry because he thinks that Jacks will harm her again. He is heartbroken and basically doesn’t want anyone with Evangeline if it’s not him.
Ā
He decides to be “more” like his father taught him, and what’s “more” than being immortal? With this decision, he is going to be able to leave a legacy like he always wanted and be remembered.
Ā
And he will kill Evangeline by drinking the tree’s blood because he is sure that the most important person for him is Evangeline, and the tree will take her for his immortality.
Ā
Well, of course, things don’t go well, and instead of taking Evangeline’s life, the tree takes Apollo instead because, of course, the person Apollo loves the most is himself.
Why Jacks eats apples
I think the entire community was waiting for this answer, and we sort of get an explanation, sort of.
Ā
In the epilogue, Evangeline asks Jacks about the apples, but he doesn’t want to answer the question. She insists, and he finally says:
“It doesn’t matter. I don’t need them anymore.”
Ā
Although this is not a direct answer, we can imply that the need for apples was a way for Jacks to avoid kissing Evangeline (or any other woman for that matter).
Ā
When Jacks felt the urge to kiss her, he grabbed an apple. It could also be interpreted as when he felt “desire,” but that is subject to interpretation.
Who cursed Jacks?
This was another surprising revelation.
Ā
Aurora Valor, the twin of Castor Valor (Chaos, the vampire), was in love with Jacks. We saw this in the Hollow, where Evangeline finds “Aurora + Jacks” written on the wall.
Ā
She cursed Jacks back then when she discovered she fell in love with a girl who could turn into a fox. But like all the ballads and stories in the North, curses often twisted the truth.
Ā
Aurora put TWO curses on Jacks:
Ā
The first curse was the archer curse. This curse, the same one Apollo had, made him want to pursue and kill the fox girl.
Ā
But when Aurora realized Jacks was never going to kill the fox girl, she then put the last curse on him:
Ā
It’s not Jacks’ true love who will be immune to his kiss and make his heart beat again. Only a girl who will never love Jacks can survive the kiss.
Ā
This explains why Donatella in Caraval was able to kill Jacks without dying in the process.
Jacks is still a Fate?
WARNING:Ā spoilers for the Caraval series
The ending of A Curse for True Love doesn’t clarify what happens to Jacks’ immortality.
Is he still considered a Fate, or has he become mortal, living a happy human life with Evangeline?
Ā
Stephanie Garber introduced a bit of ambiguity regarding this topic, which was a significant plot point in the Caraval series but is left behind in A Curse for True Love .
Ā
In Caraval, we learn that Fates cannot experience love. Falling in love causes them to forfeit their immortality and become human. In this series, Legend began losing his powers as he developed feelings for Tella.
Ā
In A Curse for True Love, Jacks acknowledges his love for Evangeline, at least by the end of the second book, but he still remains as a Fate.
Ā
To prevent any confusion, it appears that the mechanics of Fates transitioning into mortals were intentionally omitted in this trilogy, while the fundamental principles still apply.
Ā
In the epilogue, Jacks is referred to as the ‘not quite human boy.’ Thus, by the story’s end, JacksĀ is neither human nor Fate, perhaps something in between that ages like a mortal but still retaining some of his Fate powers.
Ā
Stephanie has intentionally left this open to interpretation.

Barnes & Noble Special Edition Bonus Epilogue
This is a sweet second epilogue that happens after the events with the Valors and the Tree of Souls.
Ā
Jacks tells Evangeline that together they can go anywhere she wants, and she chooses to go to The Hollow Inn.
Ā
They arrive there, and Evangeline is happy with Jacks being with her, being very protective and never letting her out of his sight. But she is worried about the Inn, which happens to have a soul of its own and is not quite happy with Jacks and Evangeline because the last time they were there, they abruptly left.
Ā
After spending some time in The Hollow, Evangeline thinks it would be nice to have some customers. Jacks isn’t very fond of the idea because he wants her all for himself, but Evangeline insists.
Ā
They decide to open the Inn to customers. Evangeline paints the new sign, and after some teasing by Jacks, they decide to stay in The Hollow for their happily ever after.
Waterstones Special Edition Bonus Epilogue
I loved this special epilogue, and it provides a lot of information about the prophecies and the stones.
Ā
Evangeline feels guilty about Apollo’s fate. She knows he is a villain who did horrible things, but she also cannot stop thinking that some of his acts were a consequence of the three curses Jacks, Lala, and her gave him.
Ā
Would he be a different person if not for the curses? Evangeline wants to think so, and she is resolved to try to give him a second chance.
Evangeline talks to Honora Valor, and she gives her the truth stone because “the stone doesn’t just force people to tell the truth. Under the right circumstances, it can also be used to write the truth.”
So Evangeline goes to the Tree of Souls to see what she can do about Apollo.
Ā
Jacks doesn’t like the idea AT ALL and goes with her to where the tree is (he admits – via the truth stone – that he is jealous that Evangeline is going to visit Apollo, so cute!).
Ā
With a drop of her blood and the magic from the truth stone, Evangeline forges a new prophecy: “If your soul be brave and your love be true, then by your spilled blood may the trapped prince in this tree be freed from you.”
If Apollo can solve the prophecy, he could be free.
Ā
But after doing this, Jacks grabs the truth stone and adds some lines to Evangeline’s prophecy, just to make Apollo’s curse a little more difficult.
“What you’ve written doesn’t seem fair; it seems impossible.”
“I thought you believed nothing was impossible for true love, Little Fox?”
We don’t know what Jacks wrote.
A Curse for True Love Owlcrate alternate ending
The last alternate ending or bonus epilogue from ‘A Curse for True Love.Ā
Ā
The Owlcrate bonus epilogue follows the events right after the Waterstones epilogue.
Ā
We find Aurora in front of the Tree of Souls, where she is angry and extremely jealous after discovering that Jacks and Evangeline are living happily in The Hollow. So, she decides to do something reckless.
Ā
Aurora wants to set Apollo free from the Tree of Souls. Upon arriving at the tree, she sees some new words written on the trunk (the prophecy Evangeline wrote in the Waterstones epilogue). She is afraid of killing herself as Apollo did if she offers her blood to the cursed tree.
Ā
However, consumed by jealousy and anger, Aurora, feeling misunderstood, decides to take her chances and offers her blood to the tree, hoping it might free Apollo and help her destroy theĀ Evangeline and Jacks’ happiness.
Ā
After a while, nothing happens, and she thinks it was all for nothing. But suddenly, a strange man with long hair, clearly NOT Apollo, appears in front of her.
‘You don’t know who I am?’ The stranger gives her a smile that is a little more feral than friendly. ‘That will make this a lot more fun.
My thoughts on the alternate endings of A Curse For True Love
Just… WOW!
The Owlcrate alternate ending clearly hints that we will surely have more books in the Magnificent North world!! Who is this long-haired stranger? A character from Caraval maybe? A new Fate?
Ā
It really was true that the endings should be read in order, with the Owlcrate ending foreshadowing maybe an Aurora and Apollo book?
We will need to wait for Stephanie to give us hints about her new projects.
Ā
I can’t wait to read more about Evajacks, and although I don’t like Aurora too much, I loved Apollo as a villain and I want his redemption arc. (and to know who this mysterious new guy is as well!)”

A Curse for True Love Best Quotes
THE best A Curse for True Love quote
This is it. This one, right here, is THE quote from A Curse for True Love.
The word ‘monster’ is mentioned several times before this quote ā a foreshadowing, for sure, of what Jacks thinks of himself or how others see him.
This quote absolutely portrays his character to perfection. He truly thinks so little of himself. Jacks doesn’t believe he’s worthy of Evangeline; he knows he has been despicable, and he genuinely believes he doesn’t deserve any redemption.
But at the same time, he is selfish. He only wants Evangeline for himself.
My conflicted boy… at least you got your happy ending. š
Chapter 26, page 183
The Best Jacks'quote in A Curse for True Love
“If the ‘I’m your Monster’ quote is the best A Curse for True LoveĀ quote, this one is the most representative of Jacks.
Ā
Evangeline hasn’t recovered her memories at this point, and Jacks is deeply torn and saddened by this fact. He presses his forehead to Evangeline’s and says this.
“Please Little Fox,remember”
It’s the first time since they met in ‘ACFTL’ that he calls her ‘Little Fox.’ Such a powerful scene!!
Chapter 27, page 188
The Best Evangeline's quote in A Curse for True Love
These are Evangeline’s words just before she kisses Jacks in front of the phoenix tree.
Ā
She knows true love is going to break Jack’s curse (and his love for her as well), and Evangeline is determined to take the last step and prove it to him.

A Curse for True Love quotes picked by Stephanie Garber
These are quotes uploaded by Stephanie Garber herself on her Instagram accountĀ before the A Curse for True Love release
"Im glad you came. I'll always come. Even when you don't want me to"
My Prediction:
āyou came?ā
āyou called.ā
Haha… this quote sounds a lot like that phrase. I’m not going to assume this is Jacks’ because I know Stephanie LOVES to deceive her readers… So, I have a hunch this is from Apollo trying to be nice with Eva.
Who said this:
I was right!! This is a dialogue between Evangeline and Apollo. Page 87, chapter 10.
He visits her room. Thsi scene happens just after she “felt” into the well.
Ā
"Apollo hated apples"
My Prediction:
Well, of course… I would be mad too, hahah. We will find out the real meaning of Jacks apples in Curse for a True Love š
Who said this:
This is chapter 19, page 135. Apollo’s POV. This scene happens when he visits the only survivor from the massacre in The Fortuna’s lands.
He knows at this time that Evangeline has Jacks dagger and he doesn’t know how she got it. Off course seeying apples puts him in a rabi jealous state. Poor Apollo..cursed three times and his wife is in love with another xD
"He enjoyed inflicting pain, not receiving it. And yet he couldn't bring himself to leave the shadows of Evangeline's bedroom."
My Prediction:
I’m 100% sure this quote refers to Jacks. He knows about Evangeline’s memory lost and our boy is suffering big time
Who said this:
I was right again ! ( although this one was easy hehe ) This is Jacks’POV, chapter 11 page 89.Ā
He is watching Evangeline sleep in her chambers.Ā
She was safe in her bed. She’d be even safer when he left her. But he was too selfish to leave just yet”
"He wanted a piece of her. To keep her. To use her for later."
My Prediction:
This quote feels like something Apollo would say. He’s the kind of red flag guy I can imagine saying these words. Of course, it could also be Luc. He’s a vampire now, and maybe he insists on biting Evangeline.
Who said this:
OMG, this is a Jacks quote!! IĀ Jacks recalls the first time he saw Evangeline in his church, and these were the feelings he had at that moment.
Page 90, chapter 11
"What are you to me? she asked. His eyes locked with hers. Nothing."
My Prediction:
Easy one. This is Evangeline speaking to Jacks. Evangeline lost her memories at the end of The Ballad of Never After.
I think Jacks is certain that it’s better for Evangeline not to remember him. She is safer this way. sniff… šĀ
Who said this:
Hehe… I was RIGHT!! This quote belongs to one of the meetings Evangeline has with ‘The Archer.’
Evangeline senses that she knows this beautiful man with an angelic face, but she doesn’t remember.
Page 138, chapter 20
"i am the one who will never let anyone harm you again."
My Prediction:
This is Apollo 100%. I know the quote can be deceiving, but what makes me certain that it’s not Jacks is the first words, “I’m the one…” The person who is stating this is not saying “I will never let anyone harm you…” He is trying to distinguish himself from another person. He is making a distinction. He is trying to say:Ā “I am better, I am really the one who will never let anyone harm you again.”
Hence, Apollo 1000%”

Alternate endings in special editions
Ok, so we have 3 alternate endings as bonus content. Therefore, to read the bonus content you will have to buy 3 A Curse for True Love copies
OFFICIAL ENDING: The āofficial ending āis in the Standard US and UK Edition. The Fairyloot Special Edition and Goldsboro Sprayed Eye Edition will have this ending as well with NO BONUS CONTENT added.
1st ALTERNATE ENDING: The bonus content with the second ending is in the Barnes & Noble and Indigo Special Editions. These editions SHARE THE SAME BONUS CONTENT, so you will get the same alternate ending ( plus the canon ending ) if you buy any of these Special Editions books.
2ND ALTERNATE ENDING: The 3rd alternate ending is in the Waterstones Special Edition. Signed editions from other UK retailers DONāT HAVE this bonus content. ONLY the Waterstones Special Edition has the special bonus content.
3RD ALTERNATE ENDING : Owlcrate Special Edition. This one seems a little unfair. This Special Edition is already sold out and only a very niche public had had access to the preorder.
To summarize we will get:
- 1 official ending,
- 3 alternate endings as bonus content.
- Each book has the official ending and the alternate ending is added as bonus content ( the alternate endings in the Special Editions donāt replace the canon ending )
.
Alternate Endings Reading Order For a Curse For True Love
Yes. Stephanie Garber provided a “suggested reading order” for the alternate endings in the special editions.
Ā
The correct reading order is as they are listed above this title:
- 1st Alternate Ending ( B&N and Indigo Editions)
- 2nd Alternate Ending ( UK Waterstones special edition)
- 3rd Alternate Ending ( Owlcrate special edition )

My opinion about bonus content, endings and multiple editions from A Curse for True Love
In my opinion, the Standard Edition ending being the official ending is not entirely correct.
Ā
If we consider how stories work in the Magnificent North, every story has the potential to have multiple endings for different people.
Ā
I will try to remember that the standard edition ending is canon, but I want to read the other endings and decide as well which ending would be canon for ME.
Ā
This task is going to be extra hard considering one of the alternate endings can only be found in the Owlcrate special edition, which is very limited and is already sold out.
Signed editions of A Curse for True Love
The signed editions available for all readers are sadly sold out.
Ā
Goldsboro is going to publish a special signed edition but is a close sale only for previous buyers of the other Once Upon a Broken Heart special Goldsboro editions.
Ā
All the signed editions from UK and US retailers are not available anymore.
What about sprayed edges?
There are currently two editions in the works with sprayed edges.
Fairyloot Special Edition (Standard First Edition no bonus content)
These two Special Editions are first offered to subscribers ( close sale ) and if they have any inventory left they are later put in the official store for the general public
