The Best Fantasy Romance Books to Read This Fall

Dark academia, Super popular dramione fanfiction . Enemies to lovers 1000%

Once a promising alchemist, Helena Marino is now a prisoner. Her Resistance friends and allies have been brutally murdered, her abilities suppressed, and the world she knew destroyed.
In the aftermath of a long war, Paladia’s new ruling class of corrupt guild families and depraved necromancers, holds Helena captive.
Helena has inexplicable memory loss of the months leading up to her capture, making her enemies wonder: Is she truly as insignificant as she appears, or are her lost memories hiding some vital piece of the Resistance’s final gambit?
To uncover the memories buried deep within her mind, Helena is sent to the High Reeve, one of the most powerful and ruthless necromancers in this new world. Trapped on his crumbling estate, Helena’s fight—to protect her lost history and to preserve the last remaining shreds of her former self—is just beginning.

Why Everyone Is Talking About Alchemised

“I have warned you. If something happens to you, I will personally raze the entire Order. That isn’t a threat. That is a promise.”( From Manacled, original fanfic)

Alchemised was originally a Dramione fanfic. Dramione is the name used by the Harry Potter community for fics that have this ship as central characters (Draco and Hermione). Manacled, the name of this fanfic, transcended the fanfiction community and reached the hands of fantasy romance readers. Everyone and their mom were reading this book that, of course, was free because it was made from already copyrighted characters.

The hype and popularity of Manacled skyrocketed, and the author decided to turn her fic into a traditional book.

I myself can confirm that the hype is totally justified. The fic was long but kept me hooked, and I ended up reading it in two days.

Now with original characters and story, I can totally see this one being one of the best fantasy romance enemies to lovers release of the season. Suffice to say, you need to add this one to your TBR immediately. (The original fanfic is not available anymore 🙁 )

More Enemies-to-Lovers Romances Like Alchemised

Old Hollywood and dark academia aesthetic, paranormal romance

It all starts with a class in an old movie theater:

Folklore 517, Local Legends and Urban Myths, taught by the mysterious Professor. Most students think her stories are fiction, but Holland St. James has always believed magic is real, and meeting the Watch Man proves it. He tells her she’ll die at midnight tomorrow unless she finds an ancient object called the Alchemical Heart.

With the clock ticking, Holland is drawn into a hidden magical world in Los Angeles, where nothing is what it seems.

A stranger promises her sister sent him to protect her, and everything about him feels like a bad idea—but as they chase clues toward the Alchemical Heart, Holland realizes that everyone in this world is lying… even this stranger.

Why You’ll Love It

“I’m not really known for my sense of humor, sweetheart.”

Stephanie Garber debuts into adult fantasy romance. With a dark academia setting and a central romance, it is one of my most anticipated releases, and I strongly suggest you preorder a copy ASAP.

Stephanie Garber is the author of Caraval and the Once Upon a Broken Heart series, and we have talked A LOT here in the blog about the latter (one of my all-time favourites).

She has a very whimsical writing style, and an original way of employing adjectives to describe people and feelings (she loves to use analogies with things you can smell or eat to describe emotions), plus, her heroes are always tormented ones looking for redemption.

I’m preparing a complete guide for this jewel, and hopefully it will go out soon!!

Star-crossed lovers, tormented and obsessive male hero

At long last, the wedding day has arrived.

The Jinn queen and the enigmatic ruler of Tulan are to be married in a magical, enchanted ceremony—but Cyrus, tethered by a blood oath to his bride-to-be, can find nothing to celebrate in this union. He’s falling ever more deeply in love with the one person oathbound to kill him.

Sworn to an ancient, unbreakable magic, Alizeh can only fulfill the prophecy to free her people by ensuring Cyrus dies by her own hand. And Cyrus is forced to await his end all while Prince Kamran inches closer, ready to take his place by Alizeh’s side.

Why You’ll Love It

“I’m not really known for my sense of humor, sweetheart.”

Oh boy… I need this book ASAP.

The fourth installment in the series , we don’t know yet if this is going to be the last one, but let me tell you… I have never read a slow burn LIKE THIS ONE in my ENTIRE LIFE.

Three books… three big, fat books, and the slow burn CONTINUES.

And contrary to what you may think, the waiting (the anticipation!) has been delightful. Tahereh Mafi is the queen of slow burn, tormented, morally grey characters, and Cyrus is the embodiment of all that.

Another series I need to write a guide ASAP, because girl, if you haven’t read this one… you’re missing one of the best fantasy series of the last couple of years.

More Angsty Romances Like This Woven Kingdom

Star-crossed lovers, epic angsty fantasy romance

Poppy was never meant to awaken, and the consequences are devastating and far-reaching, stirring ancient powers from their slumber and transforming Casteel and Kieran in ways even the Fates couldn’t have foreseen. But what that means is the least of their concerns. For now.
From flesh and fire, the Great Conspirator has returned to the mortal realm, and he wants only one thing. They must stop the true Primal of Death before he regains his strength, and it won’t be easy.

Why You’ll Love It

“I will do anything. Give anything. please, Seraphena, bring your granddaughter back to me.”

A true juggernaut release. This is the main series following Casteel and Poppy but is deeply intertwined with the “Flesh and Fire” series, which features Nikitos and Sera.

If I’m being honest, I enjoyed Nikitos and Sera’s story a tad more than the main one, but the first two installments in the “Blood and Ash” series were still fun enough for me to read them twice.

The Primal of Blood and Bone is the penultimate chapter of this series (yay!! finally haha) and is highly anticipated by the entire community (the author, Jennifer Armentrout, is an all-time favourite and has huge romantasy hits under her belt).

So, expect A LOT of hype in the weeks leading up to release and stay away from social media to avoid any spoilers!!

Spin Off , dark fantasy romance vibes

Love too grand, it kills.
Mara never intended to set foot in Ilya again. But when the king makes a life-altering decision, her interest is piqued, and Death is determined to understand Kitt Azer’s mind if he is destined to join her in the Mors.
Spending time with the king while observing the castle’s inhabitants reminds Mara that there is more to life than just death. There is love. But even the purest of intentions spur revenge and the pursuit of power. And fate will have its way with all of them—to live, to rule, to love, and most certainly, to die…

Why You’ll Love It

In case you missed the hype, Powerless took the book community by storm some time ago with its classic YA style and cute banter.

People complained it was “made for BookTok,” but I have to disagree here.

I loved and devoured Powerless because it didn’t try to be more than it was: a classic, very 2010-style fantasy romance YA book with plot twists, a powerful heroine (powerful enough to be likeable), and a charming, flirtatious hero.

This spin-off takes place through a parallel POV, alongside the events of “Fearless”, the last book in the trilogy, and is a little treat for fans of the “Powerless” saga.

Enemies to lovers, mate bond, paranormal romance

Serena Paris is orphaned, pack-less, and one of a kind. Coming forward as the first Human-Were hybrid was supposed to heal a centuries-long rift between species. Instead, it made her a target, prey to the ruthless political machinations between Weres, Vampyres, and Humans. With her enemies closing in on her, she has only one option left—if he’ll have her.

As Alpha of the Northwest pack, Koen Alexander commands obedience. His authority is so absolute, only a fool would threaten his mate. It doesn’t matter if Serena doesn’t reciprocate his feelings, nothing will stop him from keeping her safe.

Why You’ll Love It

What I love about Fantasy Romance Fall books is that we can totally include those Halloween-themed ones that involve vampires, werewolves, and every other paranormal creature ever written.

This is the case with “Mate” by Ali Hazelwood, the companion novel to “Bride”, her first installment.

And you know, if there are werewolves, there is a mating bond, alphas, and all the lore we love and adore from these paranormal creatures.

Be aware, this is a spicy one!!

The Great Hunt begins once every fifty years and only the Champions willing to face death to shatter the curse dare to enter.
The Champions…and me.

I’m no warrior, no swordsmith, and certainly no Fae, but the forest is my only hope.  I need the boon the forest will grant the winner and I’m willing to risk it all for a chance at claiming it.
I just never expected to face him beneath those trees.  The monster who commands the legion of Hollows and makes our plight a thousand times worse.
Prince Bane intends to be the death of me. But I have an oath to fulfil before I’ll let him have me. And I’ll do whatever it takes to achieve it.

Why You’ll Love It

Well well… this one is bound to stir up some very mixed opinions.

Hollow is the first book in a brand-new series from the authors of Zodiac Academy, a highly popular series that sparked strong, divided opinions within the community.

This new release is marketed as a dark romantasy with a black-hearted love interest, and from the catchy blurb it looks like it’s going to be a cat-and-mouse dynamic between the powerless human heroine and Prince Bane, our dark and probably toxic AF love interest.

Having read Zodiac Academy, I can say their writing isn’t always my personal favourite, but it’s undeniably fast-paced and addictive. There was never a dull moment, and you can expect to devour this book in a single day.

Recommended if you’re in the mood for something darker, with love interests that are walking red flags.

Slow burn, grumpy-sunshine magical office comedy

Evie Sage didn’t mean to become the right-hand woman to the kingdom’s most terrifying villain. One minute, she was applying for an entry-level position that promised “light paperwork and occasional beheadings,” and the next, she was knee-deep in magical mayhem, murder plots, and an entirely inappropriate crush on her brooding, sharp-jawed, walking disaster of a boss.
Now, with a magical prophecy unraveling, assassins showing up in the break room, and a suspicious amount of frogs wearing crowns, Evie has to figure out how to survive her job without setting the kingdom on fire?or her dignity, which is hanging by a very sarcastic thread.

Why You’ll Love It

Book three in the popular Assistant to the Villain series brings us back to Evie Sage, who took a job offer without knowing she would be the assistant of the most feared villain in the kingdom.

This third installment picks up the threads of the prophecy first introduced back in book one and FINALLY ends our suffering regarding the development of Evie and Trystan’s cute slow-burn romance.

This series fits perfectly as a cozy, light-hearted read, with lots of absurd banter and sarcastic remarks.

A perfect fit for your Fall fantasy romance TBR!!

Find here Books with the same vibe

2010 YA vibes. Forbidden love, vampires witches and humans.

Blood is survival in Bly’s world – any human can compete in the Revenant Games, an annual fight to the death between witches and vampires. The prize: resurrection or immortality. But Bly didn’t bargain on her mortal enemy, a vicious vampire, being able to steal her heart.

Why You’ll Love It

“Your girlfriend is running off with another man… or creature.

One of my favourite releases of 2024 it features what I considered a modern love triangle.

Two love interests, but the author foreshadows from the start who is going to be endgame.

The romantic relationship between Bly and the two boys, Emerson and Kerrigan, was full of tension due to Kerrigan being a vampire and basically the ‘villain’ here.

If you loved the Xaden-Violet-Dain dynamics from Fourth Wing, then this book is for you (with no spice… this is a clean romance).

My Top picks: Fantasy Romance Books to Read this Fall

Yes, I’m totally biased, sorry hahah. Stephanie Garber and Tahereh Mafi are my top favourite authors alongside Leigh Bardugo, so anything they release, I devour.

Alchemy of Secrets looks like it’s going to be very similar to Ninth House (dark academia vibes), and Every Spiral of Fate has the best slow-burn romance I’ve read in… forever hahah. These two are at the very top of my Fall TBR.

Quite close in third place is Alchemised. Although I’ve already read Manacled, the Dramione fanfic that inspired this book, I can’t wait to dive into the story again—because oh boy, the enemies-to-lovers vibe here is STRONG
